PRESCOTT, Ariz. – On a cloudy and windy day in Prescott, (11) Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) women's soccer (10-2, 5-0) took down the University of California at Merced (5-5-1, 3-2) in a big California Pacific Conference game with conference tournament seeding on the line, 3-0.
It was tough sledding for each of the teams in the first half as the wind played a big factor in how the defenses reacted. It was the Eagles who got on the board first as they used the wind to their advantage on punts from Caitlyn Aaron (JR/Flower Mound, Texas) who launched balls well passed midfield. Riley Martinson (SO/Deer Park, Wash.) got a ball to Holly Ross (SR/Oro Valley, Ariz.) at the top of the box who beat the defender and slid a ball perfectly to a streaking Krista Lee (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.). Lee would take advantage and put it just over the keeper's finger tips to score the only goal of the half.
Tides would change for a brief moment in the second half as UCM put some pressure on the Eagles. Aaron would be called into action ten minutes into the half as a ball fell down to the Bobcats at the top of the penalty area where they would fire on frame and she dove and caught it to prevent a tying goal.
After this the Eagles would turn it on and never look back. Ross and Martinson would hook up again to set up the next goal for the Eagles. Ross would flick a ball to a running Martinson who held off two defenders on her way to the box where she would slide a perfect ball into Maggi McElrath (FR/Bend, Ore.) who netted the second goal. Sierra Vicente (FR/Las Vegas, Nev.) would get the clincher late in the second half for the Eagles on a breakaway. Game ends, 3-0.
Riddle will head to Sierra Nevada College (2-9, 1-4) next Thursday (10/11) for their second Cal Pac road trip of 2018.
