PRESCOTT, Ariz. – After a tough 89 minutes of play, Riley Martinson (SO/Deer Park, Wash.) of the (7) Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) women's soccer team (15-2, 10-0 Cal Pac) would score the game winner to beat Benedictine University – Mesa (8-7, 7-3 Cal Pac) in their last regular season game of 2018, 2-1.
It was a sluggish start for the Eagles as they would give up the first goal on a long ball that found a streaking Redhawk. But there was a solid chunk of play where the Eagles had shot after shot but couldn't find the back of the net. It took some time but the Eagles would finally even the score before the half ended.
After a clearance Krista Lee (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) would give Ashley Askevold (FR/Lake Stevens, Wash.) the ball around midfield where she would launch a lobbed through ball to find Martinson. Martinson would beat the keeper and tucked it into the corner. Nothing else would go up on the scoreboard and the half would end 1-1.
ERAU would control most of the second half as well but just could not finish when the time came. Riddle had 17 shots in the second half some of which would beat the Redhawks keeper but would go wide or high. Time was almost up when the Eagles would grab the game winner.
Once again it was Martinson finding her way behind the back line of the Redhawks. With only 40 seconds left in the game she would deke the keeper and pass it into the net to end it. ERAU would waste the remaining time and come out undefeated in Cal Pac play this year.
Next up for the Eagles will be the #4 seed Marymount California in the 2018 Cal Pac Championships held at Varsity Field on Thursday (11/8) at 1:00 p.m.
