PRESCOTT, Ariz. – In a match where both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) and Hope International University (Calif.) needed a win, the Eagles gave up an overtime header goal to lose 1-0.
Majority of the first half of the ERAU men's soccer game was spent in the Royals of HIU's half of the field. In the first 20 minutes of the first half the Eagles swarmed to the front of the Royals 18-yard box were they had four shots and 2 corners. There were plenty of opportunities for the Eagles in the first half including a couple of shots that rung the post late in the half. ERAU put together a couple of set pieces that created opportunities but nothing found the mark. Starting GK Jake Hutto (SR/Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was not called on to make his first save for 25 minutes. And that was it for the first half as the Eagles and Royals went into half tied nil-nil.
Just minutes into the second half Daniel Nunez (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) had one of the best chances of the game as he slipped through the defense and tried to beat the keeper but was denied. Somehow the ball landed at Nunez feet where he lined up and shot at an empty net, which ultimately hit the post and was cleared. The Eagles best chance came when Jacob Baker (SO/Graham, Wash.) headed a shot which was parried and fell to an offside Grant Rowe (SR/Albuquerque , N.M.) who rifled a shot home which was called back. A couple of other chances were created but just like the first half the Eagles couldn't finish.
A couple of fouls stopped the action in the opening couple of minutes of the first overtime period. A foul on the Eagles set up the game winner, a ball played over the top headed in by HIU into the corner of the net ended the match.
The Eagles suit up again tomorrow (9/8) at 2:30 p.m. when they take on the Mustangs of The Master's University (Calif.) at home.
