ERAU Beats Sierra Nevada in Battle of Eagles On Senior Day

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Senior day was a success as three of the five goals that Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) women's soccer scored were by seniors in route to the 5-0 win over Sierra Nevada College.

Megan Currier (SR/Anchorage, Alaska) got the Eagles (10-3-3, 7-0-1 Cal Pac) on the board only five minutes into the half. Sierra Vicente (SO/Las Vegas, Nev.) got to the byline on the right flank and cut it back to the Anchorage native who hit it first time and got it to the back post past the SNE(2-4-1, 2-2 Cal Pac) keeper.

ERAU kept the pressure on Sierra Nevada and put multiple shots on frame. Riley Martinson (JR/Deer Park, Wash.) came down with 14 minutes to play in the half and won a penalty. Maddy Mak (SR/Renton, Wash.) took the shot from the 12-yard mark and went where momma hides the cookies beating the keeper to the top left.

After 11 minutes, Parker Lee (SR/Kennewick, Wash.) and Katy Hyde (FR/Denton, Texas) hooked up with Ashley Askevold (SO/Lake Stevens, Wash.) with terrific build-up play. Lee beat her defender and laid it off to Hyde, who played it to Askevold without a touch. The sophomore then beat the keeper to get the final goal of the half.

The second half began with more ERAU pressure. In the 12th minute of play Vicente took a free kick from the right flank which bounced around until Erica Heil (SR/Anchorage, Alaska) poked the ball to Mak. Mak slid near the six-yard box and got her shot past the keeper to score her second of the half.

Martinson snuck behind the defense on a long ball from her defense. In a one-on-one with the keeper Martinson was denied, but Vicente was running alongside and cleaned up the rebound scoring her second of the day and 10th of the season. ERAU held on to their five goal lead through regulation.

ERAU will play an exhibition match against Park University at Gilbert next Saturday on Varsity Field at 7:00 pm MST.
