Embry-Riddle Falls in Five Sets at Park

Box Score

Chandler, Ariz. – Calyee Robalin, Sharik Joseph (SR/San Diego, Calif.), and Erin Clark (SR/Phoenix, Ariz.) combined for 47 kills, but it was not enough as the No. 25 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) women's volleyball team dropped a tough, five-set match to Park-Gilbert in California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) action. The Buccaneers won by scores of 25-18, 19-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-13.

After dropping the first set, Embry-Riddle stayed close with Park in the second. With the Eagles holding a slim 18-17 lead they scored four straight points, getting back-to-back kills from Clark to go up 22-17. After a timeout, Clark made it four straight kills that put ERAU in control of the set.

Park broke open a close third set with an 8-1 run that gave the Buccaneers a 17-11 advantage. Embry-Riddle came back and closed to 17-20 on kills by Joseph and Katie Rolle (JR/Missoula, Mont.) but could not get any closer as Park went on to take the set.

Set four was back and forth as well, with the two sides trading points and runs. Park held a 23-21 lead, but ERAU picked up kills from Elisa Pauzer (SR/Campinas, Brazil) and Robalin to tie things up at 23-23. The Eagles then completed the comeback with a block from Pauzer and Joseph and then another kill from Pauzer to send it to the deciding fifth set.

Kills from Clark and Rolle had Embry-Riddle up 9-7 in the fifth, but Park picked up a kill and three straight blocks to go up 11-9. The Buccaneers stayed ahead and were just one point away from the upset at 14-11 when the Eagles picked up kills from Clark and Robalin to hold off two match points. They could not come up with another, however, as Park held on for the upset win.
