Meet the Athlete Monday Featuring Kamryn Hoehne

After switching her major freshman year from Computer Engineering to Cyber Intelligence and Security, Kamryn Hoehne (Santa Fe, N.M.) has found her niche in the Cyber Intelligence community.  Hoehne is spending her summer at the Los Alamos National Laboratory developing software but also getting to explore the area.  Read more about her internship below.

What are you studying? Why did you want to study it? Why did you come to ERAU to study it?
I am studying Cyber Intelligence and Security. Fun fact, I originally came to Riddle to study Computer Engineering on the Robotics track as I had grown up spending my summers at engineering camps and found that I really enjoyed engineering. Riddle was one of three colleges that offered Computer Engineering in the Southwest, which further convinced me to attend for my undergraduate education. After my first semester, I realized that I loved programming so much more than engineering, so I explored the Riddle degree catalog and found Cyber Intelligence and Security was a better fit for my future career goals. I chose Riddle because of the academic rigor, along with the many unique degree programs offered which set it apart from other universities I was considering. Riddle has also given me the opportunity to run both cross country and track at the collegiate level, while earning my undergraduate degree, making it the best fit for me.

How did you find your internship?
I found my internship through Handshake and with the help of ERAU Career Services.

What is your internship about?
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is one of seventeen research and development laboratories of the Department of Energy (DOE). LANL works on nuclear deterrence stockpile stewardship, protecting against emerging nuclear and cybersecurity threats, along with developing energy security solutions. Due to the nature of work and the high security, I cannot elaborate too much on what I do but it does involve cybersecurity for network infrastructure.

What is your favorite part about your internship?
I really enjoy seeing how everyone plays an important role on our team for developing and deploying software for ever-evolving cybersecurity threats. It is nice to have the opportunity to apply my experience from my classes at Riddle to my internship, and to continue to learn and strengthen my skills in cybersecurity. I enjoy passing the Manhattan Project Main Gate, attending seminars to learn more about LANL's mission, projects, and opportunities, and exploring the running/hiking trails Los Alamos has to offer.

What do you hope to gain from your internship?
Given that cybersecurity is such a broad field, I hope to gain useful experience in specific areas of Cyber that I can apply to the last year of my schooling and to my future career.
