Despite holding most of the possession and out shooting The Master's University, Embry-Riddle lost 1-0 at Reese Field on Thursday evening.
The match began with both teams displaying solid defensive setups, making it difficult for either side to find clear scoring opportunities. The Eagles had several attempts, with Jamie Brandon (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Ellie Neal (Gilbert, Ariz.) testing the Mustangs' goalkeeper, Savannah Kuhlberg, who was in fine form throughout the match.
The breakthrough came in the 38th minute when The Master's University's Kate Merical found the back of the net. Assisted by Breanna Fajardo, Merical's goal proved to be the decisive moment of the match. Despite Embry-Riddle's efforts to equalize, the Mustangs' defense held firm, and the first half ended with the home team leading 1-0.
The second half saw Embry-Riddle pushing hard for an equalizer. The Eagles' Samantha Wright (Tucson, Ariz.) and Rae Yoshioka (Pearl City, Hawaii) both had shots on goal, but Kuhlberg continued to deny them with a series of impressive saves.
Despite the Eagles' relentless pressure, The Master's University's defense, led by Bryanna Elias and Madison Smith, managed to keep them at bay. The match ended with the Mustangs holding on to their slim 1-0 lead, securing a hard-fought victory.
Embry-Riddle will look to bounce back on Saturday as the Eagles kick off against Life Pacific at 11:00am.
