Eagles Beat Beacons in 5, Lose to Defenders at Summer Slam

Embry-Riddle opened the day with a five set come from behind win over Bushnell before losing 3-0 to Dordt on the opening day of the Summer Slam tournament in Fullerton, California on Friday.

 Game 1
In a dramatic five-set showdown to open the day, the Eagles edged out Bushnell (OR) with a 3-2 victory (25-23, 15-25, 24-26, 26-24, 17-15).

The Eagles were led by standout performances from Anela Chew, who posted a match-high 17 kills with a .302 hitting percentage, and Emma Barber, who contributed 14 kills, five service aces, and 20 total points. Setter Alice Tuci orchestrated the offense with 26 assists and added four kills of her own.

Embry-Riddle took the opening set 25-23, capitalizing on a mid-set service run by Barber that included three aces and a kill. Bushnell responded with a dominant second set, winning 25-15 behind Hailey Heider's serving streak and Leah Agost's powerful attacks. Agost finished with 15 kills and a .351 hitting percentage, while Heider added 8 kills and 6 aces.

The third and fourth sets were tightly contested, with Bushnell narrowly taking the third 26-24 and Embry-Riddle rallying to win the fourth 26-24. The fifth set saw Bushnell jump out to a 10-4 lead, but the Eagles mounted a furious comeback, fueled by clutch kills from Chew and a service ace from Sydney Sniffen to seal the match at 17-15.

Game 2

Despite a strong opening set and standout individual performances, ERAU couldn't overcome a sharp Dordt University squad, falling in straight sets (22-25, 16-25, 19-25) on Friday evening at the Hope International Summer Slam.

The Eagles (3-3) came out energized in the first set, trading points with Dordt through eight ties and a lead change. Emma Barber led the way offensively with 10 kills on 24 swings, hitting .292 and contributing three digs. Brooke Eglinton was highly efficient, notching five kills on nine attempts with a .556 hitting percentage.

Libero, Alexis Creager anchored the back row with a match-high 15 digs and added six assists and a service ace. Sydney Sniffen chipped in with two kills, four assists, and a service ace, while Ronni Lyons added four digs and a kill.

Embry-Riddle showed resilience in the third set, keeping pace with Dordt through five ties and another lead change, but the Defenders' .373 team hitting percentage proved too much to overcome. The Eagles hit .231 as a team, with their best offensive set coming in the third (.267).

Defensively, the Eagles recorded 41 digs and two block assists, with Haeden Baker and Hannah Clear contributing on the net. Clear also added three kills and two digs.

ERAU will play again tomorrow at 8am against Northwest University and finish the Summer Slam against the College of Idaho at 12pm.
