Game Recap: Baseball |

Eagles Split with Warriors

Embry-Riddle played their first games of the season at Eagle Baseball Field on Friday and after earning a 20-4 win in the first game of the day against Nelson University, ERAU lost 7-5 in the second game.

Game 1
The Warriors scored first as they got a run in the top of the first inning, but Embry-Riddle answered right away.  Miles Murphy doubled and then James Warren followed with a double to bring in Murphy and tie the score at 1-1.  Roberto Garza-Nunez then hit his first of five hits in the game that brought home Warren and ERAU quickly led 2-1.

Nelson tied it up the score in the top of the second at 2-2, but the tied didn't last long as ERAU exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Kaleb Shannon led off the inning with a double followed by a single from Kaden Menard.  A walk by Caden Truman loaded the bases for the Eagles.  Konner Nelson singled to bring home Shannon and a sacrifice fly by Murphy brought home another run for ERAU and made the score 4-2.  Warren's second hit of the game brought home two more runs and the last Embry-Riddle run of the inning came in on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Eagles added three more runs on three hits.  Truman led off with a double and was able to steal third.  He came around to score on a wild pitch.  Warren was walked and after stealing second he scored on a double by Garza-Nunez.  Garza-Nunez crossed the plate on a double by Blake Moore.  After three innings, ERAU led 10-3.

After Jesse Kaphing pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning, Embry-Riddle added to their lead with four runs in the bottom half of the 4th inning.  Shannon got things going with a single and then Menard was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second.  Nelson was then walked to load up the bases once again for the Eagles.  Murphy then earned an RBI the hard way as he was hit by a pitch.  Menard scored on a sacrifice fly by Warren to bring the score to Embry-Riddle 12-3.  After a balk was called on the Warriors, Nelson scored and the last run of the inning came when Murhpy scored on another double by Garza-Nunez.

The fifth inning was scoreless for both teams, but ERAU followed with a 6 run sixth inning to bring their score to 20.

Embry-Riddle went on to win 20-4 in the first game of the day.

Game 2
ERAU scored a lot of runs in the first couple of innings in the first game, but the Eagles didn't score until the end of game 2 and it was a little too late.

Nelson scored 5 runs in the top of the 4th inning.  Embry-Riddle answered with two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning as Garza-Nunez continued his good day at the plate with a single and then Shannon hit his first collegiate homerun to make the score 5-2.

The Warriors added two runs in the top of the 7th, before ERAU could cut into their lead anymore.

Elijah Pak led off the bottom of the 7th inning with a double, Murphy followed with a walk, and Truman a single to load the bases with no outs for the Eagles.  A single by Warren brought home Pak and Murhpy came around to score on a wild pitch to cut the Nelson lead to 7-4.  ERAU would tack on one more run on a fielder's choice but Nelson held on for the game two 7-5 win.

Jonah Montes pitched well in relief giving up just three hits in 3.2 innings of work as he struck out four batters.

Embry-Riddle will hit the road to Caldwell Idaho next week as the Eagles play College of Idaho in a four game series beginning on Friday, February 14th.
