ERAU Starts GSAC Play 2-0

Embry-Riddle began their first season in the Great Southwest Athletic Conference with two wins at Benedictine Mesa today as the Eagles won the first game 5-3 followed by a 3-2 win at Mesa High School on Sunday afternoon.  

Game 1

Game Highlights:

  • Early Innings: The game started off slow for Embry-Riddle, with no runs scored in the first five innings. Benedictine Mesa took the lead in the third inning with a single run, followed by two more in the fifth inning, making the score 3-0.

  • Embry-Riddle's Comeback: Embry-Riddle rallied in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to tie the game. Key hits from Roberto Garza-Nunez and Owen Cain, along with an error by Benedictine Mesa, contributed to the scoring.

  • Seventh and Eighth Innings: Embry-Riddle managed to score one run in both the seventh and eighth innings, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Cain and a double by Sawyer Amato

  • Pitching Performance: Jesse Kaphing pitched eight innings for Embry-Riddle, striking out nine batters and allowing three earned runs. Spencer Rego closed the game with a strong ninth inning, striking out all three batters he faced.

Game 2

Game Highlights:

  • Early Lead: Embry-Riddle took the lead in the second inning, with Kaden Menard scoring on a single by Connor Rosinski, aided by an error from Benedictine Mesa's center fielder.

  • Consistent Scoring: The Eagles added another run in the third inning when Amato scored on a single by Cain. They maintained their momentum with a run in the sixth inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly by  Amato that brought Sawyer Stout home.

  • Pitching Excellence: Eric Schumann started strong for Embry-Riddle, pitching five innings, striking out six batters, and allowing only one earned run. Noah Tschopp and Jonah Montes provided solid relief, with Montes closing the game with a perfect seventh inning.

  • Defensive Strength: Embry-Riddle's defense was crucial in maintaining their lead, with key plays including a double play in the fourth inning and several flyouts that prevented Benedictine Mesa from scoring.
