Embry-Riddle fell 11-1 in the first game of the day to The Master's University in Santa Clarita, Calif. and a close second game 3-2 to the Mustangs on Friday.
Game 1
Embry-Riddle struck first on Friday afternoon, but The Master's responded with a pair of big innings that the Eagles couldn't overcome in an 11–1 setback at Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
The Eagles opened the game with quality pressure on the basepaths. After Konner Nelson worked a leadoff walk, Jake Lokos lined a single to left, and a sacrifice bunt from Miles Murphy moved both runners into scoring position. Javier Izaguirre Jr. delivered with a sacrifice fly to left, bringing Nelson home for a 1–0 lead.
But The Master's answered immediately, using a three-hit, four-run bottom of the first—highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Ty Beck and Isaiah Morales—to seize momentum.
Embry-Riddle continued to generate traffic throughout the afternoon, finishing with eight hits, including multi-hit efforts from Lokos (2-for-4) and Caden Truman (2-for-3, 2B). Truman's double in the sixth was the Eagles' lone extra-base hit.
The Eagles' best chance to claw back came in the fourth, when singles from Fernando Perez-Ortega, Owen Montgomery, and Aleksander Krupa loaded the bases with one out. However, a foul out and flyout ended the threat.
On the mound, Embry-Riddle used four pitchers. JJ Chrobocinski provided the most efficient outing, tossing a scoreless sixth with a strikeout and no hits allowed.
Game 2
Embry-Riddle's pitching staff turned in one of its strongest collective efforts of the season on Friday afternoon, but a seventh-inning rally from The Master's edged the Eagles 3–2 in the second game of the doubleheader at Lou Herwaldt Stadium.
Right-hander Spencer Lanz set the tone early, working out of multiple jams and holding the Mustangs to just one unearned run over 5.0 innings. Lanz scattered six hits, struck out three, and stranded eight runners during his outing.
The Eagles broke through first in the third inning. After
Aleksander Krupa was hit by a pitch,
Carter Graham laid down a sacrifice bunt, and
Konner Nelson delivered a two-out RBI single to right, giving ERAU a 1–0 lead.
The Master's tied the game 1–1 in the fourth, capitalizing on a two-out double and a throwing error, but Lanz and the Eagle defense kept the Mustangs from taking the lead through five.
ERAU's best defensive stretch came in the fifth, when Lanz retired the side in order, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
The Eagles continued to pressure late. In the seventh, Krupa reached on an error, and Jacob Samsing entered as a pinch-runner, setting the stage for a big swing. James Warren came off the bench and ripped a game-tying RBI double to left, bringing ERAU level at 2–2.
But The Master's answered in the bottom half, stringing together four straight singles before a two-run double from Jack Drew pushed the Mustangs ahead 3–2.
ERAU finished with two hits—Nelson's RBI single and Warren's late double—but made the most of its opportunities, scoring in both innings where runners reached scoring position.
Reliever Jesse Kaphing took the loss after allowing two runs in the seventh, though he induced two groundouts to limit further damage.
Embry-Riddle will play the series finale tomorrow in Santa Clarita with the first pitch scheduled for 11am.
