Embry-Riddle Pulls Away for 3-1 Victory over La Sierra

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — Embry-Riddle scored twice in the final 14 minutes to secure a 3-1 victory over La Sierra University on Tuesday night at Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.

The Eagles struck first in the eighth minute when Sean Maguire finished a pass from Rojvan Karaer to give Embry-Riddle an early 1-0 advantage. Embry-Riddle maintained pressure throughout the opening half, outshooting La Sierra 9-6 and earning five corner kicks.

After a scoreless stretch to open the second half, the Eagles doubled their lead in the 77th minute. Hugo Gil collected a pass from Mars Davis and scored his first goal of the season to make it 2-0.

La Sierra answered in the 84th minute when Daniel Garcia converted a chance assisted by Andrew Castaneda, cutting the deficit to one. Embry-Riddle responded quickly, however, as Kevin Yamna restored the two-goal cushion less than five minutes later. Maguire set up Yamna for his second goal of the season and the final margin.

Embry-Riddle finished with a 20-12 advantage in shots and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Maguire led the Eagles with five shots, three of which were on target, while Rodrigo Garcia also recorded five attempts.

Goalkeeper Sam Macdonald anchored the Embry-Riddle defense with seven saves. The Eagles limited La Sierra to one goal despite 12 total shots.

GSAC play continues for ERAU on Saturday as the Eagles will play at Arizona Christian with kickoff at 8pm.
