Buzzer Beater in OT Topples Embry-Riddle

CHANDLER, Ariz. After staging a second half comeback that sent the game into overtime, a three-point shot at the buzzer in OT lifted Menlo College (Calif.) past Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.), 80-77, in a non-conference men's basketball matchup. Sophomore Gilbert Ibarra (Prescott Valley, Ariz.) led the Eagles with 19 points off the bench.

Embry-Riddle (6-4) had an early 11-6 lead on a trey from Ibarra five minutes in, but Menlo (13-2) came back to tie the game and then went on to a five-point lead of its own on a Kalan Camero free throw at 11:19. The Oaks continued to slowly build on their advantage, reaching a double-figure lead at 25-15 on a shot by Jeremiah Testa. Menlo led by as many as 13 points in the final minutes of the half, but ERAU cut it to nine at the half on a shot by sophomore Nick Johnson (Anthem, Ariz.).

Embry-Riddle whittled away at the Menlo lead early in the second half, getting within two at 41-39 when a steal by junior Logan Skurdal (Meridian, Idaho) led to a basket by Johnson. The Eagles managed to tie the game twice after that on treys by Ibarra and Johnson, but could not get back in front of the Oaks.

With less than seven minutes left Ibarra hit a pair of shots in a row that put ERAU on top, 62-61. Menlo did not let the Eagles get any further than that, with a three from Charles Neal with a minute left breaking a 66-66 tie. A shot from Johnson made it a one-point game before Menlo connected on 1-of-2 free throws with 27 seconds left. Then, with a second left, Johnson struck again to send it to overtime.

Embry-Riddle had an early lead in the extra period, but Menlo came back to go up 76-72 on a shot by Jeremiah Testa with 2:17 to play. A three from junior Ryan Skurdal (Meridian, Idaho) got it back down to a one-point game with two minutes left. After the Oaks hit one of two free throws again, junior Calvin Carmichael (Tucson, Ariz.) tied it again at 77-all with 17 ticks left. With one possession left, Menlo made the most of it as Charles Neal hit a three as time expired to lift the Oaks to the dramatic win.
