SURPRISE, Ariz. – Terrific shooting from the field and the line propels Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) men's basketball (8-7, 1-0 Cal Pac) past Ottawa University (Ariz.) (2-9) in their last game of the year.
ERAU jumped out to an early 9-6 lead but then separated from the Spirit thanks to a 15-2 run. It was sparked by three long balls by Ryan Skurdal (SR/Meridian, Idaho), Logan Skurdal (SR/Meridian, Idaho) and Conner Verdugo (FR/Sahuarita, Ariz.) that jumpstarted the run. Verdugo would then convert four of his eventual nine free throws
By the 1:33 mark the Eagles were in control and added an 8-0 run to end the half on a good note. Nick Johnson (JR/Anthem, Ariz.) would make a couple of layups and a Joseph Jewell (SR/Louisville, Ky.) throw down and one completed the half for ERAU. Riddle went into the half up 27, 44-17.
L. Skurdal would add two more triples on a 10-0 run in the second half that saw ERAU extend their lead to 35 which was the largest of the game. Riddle would add nine more points after that but it was already too late.
Skurdal and Verdugo were the only Eagles to get into double figures but three others had at least eight points. Johnson had it all working as he led the team in rebounds (6) and assists (5) to add to his eight points.
ERAU will be back in action after the holiday (1/3) and will take on UC Merced in California Pacific Conference play at 8:30 pm MST.
