Box Score PRESCOTT, ARIZ. - Monday night provided an excellent early test for the ERAU women's basketball team, as they faced the University of Providence at home. The Eagles did not get off to the best start, giving up the game's first 11 points before using a timeout.
Despite the poor start, ERAU found themselves leading an NAIA National Tournament team from last season late in the fourth quarter. But, Providence found its grove on both ends of the floor scoring the game's final 14 points to take a 70-60 victory away from the ERAU Activity Center.
At one point, the Eagles trailed by 14 points during the second quarter, but finally took the lead late in the third thanks to a pair of Susie Reynoso free throws. ERAU outscored Providence 31-23 in the second and third quarters, but the Argos outscored the Eagles 24-15 in the final frame.
Two Embry-Riddle players finished in double-digit scoring figures, as Reynoso had 23 points while Zakiirah King had 20. King also had seven rebounds, second only to Meghan Strickler's eight.
Providence's Parker Esary finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds. Despite not finding the desired result, it was still a great effort for a young team with just two returners and 19 months in between seasons.
"I am definitely proud of them for how hard they battled," head coach Michael Trujillo said. "We were down… but then I look up and we're up in the fourth quarter. That's huge for us to be able to fight back, stay composed, battle back and get the lead like that."
The Eagles will spend the remainder of the week practicing for its upcoming matchup with Arizona Christian on Friday. Tip-off from Prescott is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
