LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Embry-Riddle wrestling team had a successful day at the Doug Moses Open, as they had five different athletes finish third or better in their respective weight classes. It was a great day overall as well, with nine of ten wrestlers finishing sixth or better in their respective brackets.
Three Eagles finished second on Saturday, as Stone Aguirre (165 lbs.), Daniil Gorshkov (174 lbs.) and Michael Densmore (184 lbs.) all were one match away from taking home an individual championship. Each wrestler overcame NCAA Division II competition to reach the finals of their respective weight classes.
Gorshkov was very impressive in his two wins in the open, as he scored a pair of falls to reach the final at 174 pounds. Aguirre had a fall in his opening match of the day, and Densmore had a tech fall in his semifinal match.
Two wrestlers finished third for ERAU, as Carson Coy (141 lbs.) and Jonah Chew (149 lbs.) had solid performances. After dropping his quarterfinal match, Coy won four straight to finish in third, and walk away with a 5-1 day. Chew made it to the semifinal at 149 pounds, and won four matches in total on Saturday.
Landon Smith (125 lbs.), Jose Egurrola (165 lbs.) and Matthew Stevensen (197 lbs.) all finished fifth, with Allan Hendricks (133 lbs.) made it to the fifth place match. Smith and Stevensen had good showings to finish the day, as each of them won by decision to finish fifth.
Embry-Riddle will now have a week away from competition before a busy three days starting on Friday, December 16. The Eagles will travel to Reno, Nev. to start the packed weekend by participating in the Reno Duals.
