Box Score PRESCOTT, ARIZ. – After months of hard work, learning and heartbreak, the Embry-Riddle men's basketball team finally broke its lengthy losing streak with an 89-72 victory over Park-Gilbert on Saturday night. The Eagles had a 17 point lead at the half, and finished with that exact margin of victory as they held the Buccaneers to just 35 points in the final 20 minutes.
David Teibo had a monstrous night, grabbing 17 rebounds to go along with his 14 points. Teibo had 12 points and nine rebounds in the first half, and eight important boards in the final 20 minutes.
The 17 rebounds for Teibo was not only a career high, surpassing the 16 he had against Pacific Union earlier in the season, but tied a program record as well. Nick Johnson had 17 rebounds during a December 2017 game, and the first record holder was in attendance to see Teibo join the top of the list.
Trevor Weir had a huge night as well, finishing with a double-double along with his post-mate Teibo. Weir had 11 points and 14 rebounds, plus had four blocks as a defensive presence inside. The four swats also tied a program record set by Logan Skurdal, who was also in attendance on Saturday, which came against SAGU American-Indian College on December 3, 2019.
Chase Verdugo was electric off the bench, as he scored 16 points and knocked down four of his seven attempts from behind the arc. As a team, the Eagles made ten three-pointers, hitting six of those in the first half as ERAU built its large lead.
The Buccaneers got within nine during the second half, but the Eagles eventually pulled away for the double-digit victory. The group this season had been in similar situations where they led and eventually lost the lead, but Embry-Riddle found that extra gear to push through.
"I feel so good for the team," head coach Eric Fundalewicz said. "Their commitment and all the work they have been putting in is showing. I am so incredibly proud of what they've done, how they've played. They've earned every minute, every ounce of happiness with all this."
The Eagles look to end its season on a two-game win streak when they host Benedictine-Mesa in the finale. Tipoff from the ERAU Activity Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
