Box Score PHOENIX, ARIZ. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team overcame an uncharacteristic three quarters to send its matchup with Park-Gilbert into overtime, but fell one point short after an extra ten minutes of basketball. The Eagles had the final possession of the game, but Aryana Gonzales's runner fell off the rim and the Buccaneers hung on for the win.
ERAU trailed by nine at the end of the third quarter, then by 11 just 24 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Eagles played resilient basketball, outscoring Park-Gilbert 24-13 in the final 9:30 to send the game to overtime.
Embry-Riddle had the lead in the waning seconds after Susie Reynoso hit a pair of free throws to break a 62-62 tie, but Park-Gilbert hit an inside shot with less than a second left to send the game into the extra period. Gonzales tied the game with a pair of free throws with 1:12 remaining in the first overtime, and neither team scored again after that to send the game into more extra basketball.
Zakiirah King finished with a double-double off the bench, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 24 minutes. King really went to work offensively when her team needed it the most, scoring eight points on 4-7 shooting and accounting for a third of the Eagles points in the final ten minutes.
Gonzales finished one assist shy of a double-double, scoring 13 points and dishing nine assists. She was active all over the floor without the ball in her hands, grabbing four rebounds and recording four steals.
The Eagles will return home on Saturday to start its home weekend series on Saturday against Saint Katherine. Tipoff from the ERAU Activity Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
