Reynoso Scores 18 in Eagles Win

Box Score

Last week's Cal Pac Women's Basketball Player of the Week, Susie Reynoso (Escondido, Calif.) scored 18 points tonight to lead Embry-Riddle to a 73-71 win over the Golden Bears of West Virginia Tech in Beckley, West Virginia.

Zakiirah King (Chandler, Ariz.) started the game off right for the Eagles as she scored the first two points on a layup.  When WVU Tech came down the floor on their first possession Mehgan Strickler (Glendale, Ariz.) blocked their shot.  The teams were tied at 4-4 until Micaela Hidalgo (Greeley, Colo.) made a free throw with 6:56 to go in the quarter and then a layup a minute later to give ERAU a 7-4 lead.  With 4:50 left in the quarter the Golden Bears took their first lead of the game, but it didn't last long as Reynoso made a three to put Embry-Riddle back in control.  At the end of the first quarter, ERAU was up 23-15.

In the second quarter, Kate McBride (Atlanta, Ga.) got the offense going for the Eagles as she made a layup with 8:38 to go and make the score 25-18.  WVU scored the next four points to get within three before Ella Schott (Cave Creek, Ariz.) made a jump shot to bring the lead back to five points. With 6:07 to go in the quarter Schott made two free throws to extend the Embry-Riddle lead to 11 points and force a Golden Bears timeout.  Out of the timeout, WVU quickly cut into the ERAU lead with a three point basket and a layup as the Golden Bears kept the pressure on and the game was tied 41-41 at halftime.

Much like the start of the game, the Eagles scored first on a layup, this time by Strickler, to retake the lead.  Embry-Riddle's defense played well and held WVU Tech to no points in the first 3:32 of the half, however with 4:01 to go in the third quarter the game was tied again at 50-50.  Reynoso scored the next five points on a layup and a three point shot to put ERAU back ahead by five but once again the Golden Bears tied the game up.  With 1:53 to go in the quarter, the score was tied 57-57.  At the end of the third, WVU Tech had a two point lead over the Eagles.

The fourth quarter went the way of West Virginia Tech to start as they scored the first four points to take their largest lead of the game at six points.  With 8:28 to go in the game, Reynoso got the steal and layup to bring the Eagles within four at 59-63.  The Golden Bears kept attacking though and extended their lead to 8 on two made free throws with 7:28 left.  Embry-Riddle cut into the lead as they scored the next six points on a basket and two free throws by King and a layup by Schott.  Reynoso tied the game at 67-67 as Aryana Gonzales (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) assisted her layup.  ERAU retook the lead at 69-67 with 2:35 to go in the game, but again WVU Tech tied it up with 1:41 left.  The Golden Bears then took the lead with 19 seconds left in the game as they were up 71-69 and Embry-Riddle took a full timeout.  Coming out of the timeout, Hannah Urbano (Kailua, Hawaii) hit a three point shot to put the Eagles up 72-71 with 10 seconds remaining in the game.  Reynoso was fouled with one second left and made a free throw to seal the game for Embry-Riddle with a score of 73-71.

King and Schott each added 14 points for ERAU tonight and Hidalgo led the team in rebounds with eight.  Reynoso finished the game with three steals and Strickler and Liz Behan (St. Peters, Mo.) each added two blocks for the Embry-Riddle defense.

The Eagles will play again on Friday at Emory & Henry as they finish up their East Coast road trip with another 5:30pm EST tip-off.
