Box Score Embry-Riddle fell on the road by a score of 67-64 at the University of Saint Katherine Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon.
Aryana Gonzales (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) got the scoring going for ERAU with a layup just thirty seconds into the game. The Eagles extended their lead to 6-0 as Zakiirah King (Chandler, Ariz.) made a layup. The Embry-Riddle defense held USK scoreless until there was 4:20 left in the first quarter. After the Firebirds made a layup, Mehgan Strickler (Glendale, Ariz.) answered their basket with a three and ERAU led 16-11 after the first quarter.
ERAU was outscored in the second quarter 25-12 after they shot 18.8% in the second ten minutes. Liz Behan (St. Peters, Mo.) led the Eagles with four points and Susie Reynoso (Escondido, Calif.) grabbed four rebounds. As Embry-Riddle went into halftime they were down 36-28.
The Eagles started strong in the third quarter and quickly cut the USK lead to four points and forced a Firebird timeout. Out of the timeout Micaela Hidalgo (Greeley, Colo.) made a jump shot to pull ERAU within two at 36-34. With 2:22 left in the third quarter the teams were tied 39-39 and at the end of the quarter Embry-Riddle was down 46-43.
The teams traded points to start the fourth quarter as there were a few different lead changes and ties in the final quarter. ERAU led 57-56 on a King layup with just 3:07 left in the game, but USK stormed back and took a 58-57 lead with 2:44 to go. The Firebirds took a four point lead before Gonzales made a three point basket with 1:09 left to make it a one point game. USK was fouled on a three point shot and made all three free throws to retake their four point lead and they went on to win by three at 67-64.
Embry-Riddle will play again on Saturday as they head to Westcliff to take on the Warriors at 4pm PST on Saturday afternoon at the Jordan Lawley Facility.
