Eagles Fall in Overtime

Box Score

Embry-Riddle and Westcliff were tied late as the game went to overtime, but the Eagles were unable to come away with a win as they fell 62-52 at the Jordan Lawley Facility in Irvine on Saturday evening.

Aryana Gonzales (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) started the scoring for ERAU as she made a three point shot halfway through the first quarter to put the Eagles up 3-2.  The scoring for both teams picked up later in the quarter as Zakiirah King (Chandler, Ariz.) made two free throws and a layup and Kate McBride (Atlanta, Ga.) added four points. At the end of the first quarter Embry-Riddle led 11-9.

McBride kept her strong game going as she made a layup to start the second quarter and the ERAU defense stood strong as Westcliff didn't score until 3 minutes into the quarter.  The Warriors got within two points with 4:33 left in the half but then King made back to back three point baskets and Nicole Evenson (Bemidji, Minn.) added one of her own as the Eagles got out to an 11 point led.  At the half Embry-Riddle led 28-17.

King scored the first six points of the third quarter for ERAU, however the Warriors started making shots of their own as the started to come back.  Embry-Riddle held onto their lead at the end of the third quarter but they were only up three as Westcliff hit a three point shot with just one second left.

The final ten minutes of the game were very back and forth as neither team could get a run going.  Westcliff took their first lead with five minutes remaining and they held onto it until McBride sunk two free throws with 1:39 to go.  The Warriors made one free throw with six seconds left and the game headed into overtime tied at 50-50.  Embry-Riddle struggled to score in overtime as they lost 62-52.

King led the Eagles with 18 points and McBride scored 14.  Mehgan Strickler (Glendale, Ariz.) grabbed 12 rebounds to lead ERAU and Evenson added three assists.

Embry-Riddle plays next on Thursday as the Pioneers from Antelope Valley come to Prescott for an important matchup in the Activity Center beginning at 5:30pm.
