Box Score On Industry Night in the Activity Center, the large crowd was treated to a very fast paced game as Embry-Riddle beat Antelope Valley 78-66.
Zakiirah King (Chandler, Ariz.) scored first for Embry-Riddle before Antelope Valley scored the next six points in the first quarter. Mehgan Strickler (Glendale, Ariz.) scored next on a three point basket to end the ERAU scoring drought and at the first media timeout the Pioneers led 9-5. Out of the timeout, Strickler made a layup to bring the Eagles within two. UAV scored the next five points as they got out to a seven point advantage late in the first quarter. Liz Behan (St. Peters, Mo.) made two free throws followed by a three point basket for Ella Schott (Cave Creek, Ariz.). At the end of the first quarter, Antelope Valley led 18-12.
The second quarter saw UAV run out to an eight point advantage before Embry-Riddle came running back. Aryana Gonzales (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) score five points in a row and then King scored a layup and added a free throw to make the score 26-24 and bring ERAU within two. After the Pioneers made a three point shot, King made two more free throws followed by a three point basket by Susie Reynoso (Escondido, Calif.) to tie the score at 29-29. With 3:03 left in the half, the score was tied at 31-31 before the Eagles went on the first run of the game. Micaela Hidalgo (Greeley, Colo.) made a jump shot and finished the three point play and Kate McBride (Atlanta, Ga.) added a three point basket during the ERAU run. At the half, Embry-Riddle led 42-31.
After a back and forth third quarter the score was 57-51 in favor of the Eagles as the teams headed into the final quarter. McBride got things going for ERAU to start the fourth with a quick layup but UAV answered right back with a basket of their own. With 7:55 remaining Embry-Riddle led by nine with the score at 64-55. Neither team scored again until Behan made a jump shot with 6:17 to go. ERAU played strong defense as they did not let the Pioneers score from when there was 5:57 remaining in the game until they got a fast break layup with 3:34 to go. Embry-Riddle closed out the game and went on to win 78-66.
It was a total team effort for the Eagles as five players scored in double figures. Strickler and King each finished the game with a double-double.
ERAU will be home again on Saturday as the Golden Eagles of La Sierra come to town for a 6:30pm tip-off.
