Eagles Take Down Red Hawks

Box Score

Embry-Riddle used a basket with 2 seconds left by Dennis Pomazanov (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) to take a 61-59 win over the Red Hawks of Simpson in the Activity Center on Saturday afternoon.

Simpson led early in the game but a layup and a dunk by Pomazanov put the Eagles ahead 11-10 with 15:47 left in the first half of the game.  ERAU never trailed again.  With 14:49 left in the half, Gabe Estebanes (Broomfield, Colo.) made a layup to give Embry-Riddle a 14-10 advantage.  Neither team scored for the next two minutes until Simpson made a three point basket to get back within one point.  Pomazanov scored the next seven points for the Eagles and Jake Klingler (Gilbert, Ariz.) made a layup to give ERAU a 23-14 lead.  Klingler then made a three point basket and a free throw that followed to put ERAU up by 11.  Simpson scored the next seven points to cut the Embry-Riddle lead to four.  At the half, ERAU led 32-29.

Simpson scored first in the second half, but David Teibo (Phoenix, Ariz.) followed right away with a layup and then Pomazanov made a three point basket to extend the Eagle lead back to six points.  Both teams went cold for two minutes until Christmas Togiai, Jr. (Kapolei, Hawaii) ended the cold streak with a layup.  Embry-Riddle's defense held the Red Hawks without scoring for another three minutes as they increased their lead to 11 points.  Simpson made a three with 9:22 left in the game to make the score 46-38.  The teams traded points until the Red Hawks went on a run of their own as they scored back to back three point baskets to get within three points.  With 2:30 to go in the game, Simpson made it 56-53.  The Red Hawks tied the score at 59-59 with 18 seconds left on two free throws.  Embry-Riddle used a timeout and Togiai, Jr. made a great pass to Pomazanov who finished the layup with two seconds left to give ERAU the 61-59 lead.

Pomazanov tied the school record with 17 rebounds and added 29 points to his career night as he led the Eagles.  Togiai, Jr. had nine assists, Teibo added eight rebounds, and Klingler scored 12 points.

Embry-Riddle will play next weekend in Northern California with their first game against the Pioneers of Pacific Union in Angwin on Thursday with tipoff scheduled for 8:30pm MST.
