Box Score Embry-Riddle qualified for the Great Southwest Athletic Conference Championship tournament with their 76-72 win over Life Pacific on Thursday evening in California.
ERAU and LPU were battling for the #4 seed in the upcoming conference tournament and a comeback by the Eagles led to the win.
The Eagles went up early, 12-6 on a layup by
Jacey Canalin, but the Warriors came storming back on a 14-3 run as Life Pacific took a 20-15 lead with 10:27 left on the clock in the first half. After a layup by
Peter Dress, Life Pacific scored another four unanswered to increase their lead to seven points.
Noah Gifft and
Christian Wells both made baskets to bring the Eagles deficit to three with 5:40 left in the half. A free throw by
Demari Hackett tied the game at 26-26, but once again the Warriors scored six unanswered points to take back the advantage. At the half, Life Pacific led 34-30.
The Warriors led for most of the second half and led by as many as eight points with 13:16 left in the game, but Embry-Riddle kept battling back. ERAU was finally able to tie the score at 57-57 on a layup by Gifft and another layup from Gifft put ERAU ahead for the first time since the first half with 6:43 left in the game. A steal and dunk by
Conner Ivy put the Eagles up four with just over six minutes left. Embry-Riddle led by nine with 2:30 left in the game, but just like the Eagles, the Warriors would not go away quietly. Dress sunk two free throws with :13 seconds on the clock to put the game out of reach and give ERAU their first GSAC playoff berth. It is also only the second time the Eagles have qualified for the post season in their short basketball history, the only other time coming in 2018-2019 when Embry-Riddle played in the Cal Pac Championship game.
Gifft led ERAU with 14 points followed by Dress with 13, Canalin with 12, and Wells with 11. Wells grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the Eagles and Canalin finished with 5 assists.
Embry-Riddle will be the #4 seed and play again on Saturday, March 1st.
