Embry-Riddle Closes Out First Tournament of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fullerton, Calif. – After splitting a pair of matches yesterday, it was a similar story on the final day for the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) women's volleyball team at the Hope International University Summer Slam. The Eagles split a pair, dropping their first match of the day to No. 15 Corban University, 25-19, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20. In the final match of the tournament the Eagles squared their record with a 26-24, 25-19, 25-18 decision over host Hope International University. Dalia Haase (FR/Tucson, Ariz.) had a strong day for ERAU, totaling 27 kills over the two matches.

Vs. Corban
A slow start by the offense proved costly in the morning loss to Corban (3-0). The Eagles managed just a eight and six kills in each of the first two sets while the Warriors notched 12 in each as they jumped out to the 2-0 lead.

ERAU found its offense in the third set, starting off with a Terra Gordon (SR/San Antonio, Texas) ace and kills by Julia Kjenstad (SR/Tacoma, Wash.) and Haase to take a quick 5-0 lead. Corban did not get closer than three points the rest of the way. Sahrik Joseph had three straight kills late that put the set away for the Eagles. In the fourth set Embry-Riddle got off to a promising start with a 7-4 lead, but Corban came back with three to tie the set. The Eagles still led 9-8 after a kill from Caylie Robalin, but the Warriors pulled out to a 13-9 lead and held off ERAU the rest of the way to take the victory.

Vs. Hope International
Embry-Riddle (2-2) and Hope International (3-1) were neck and neck in the opening set. The Royals were within a point of a first set win at 24-22 when the Eagles rallied with four straight. Elisa Pauzer (SR/Campinas, Brazil) started the rally with a kill and Erin Clark (SR/Phoenix, Ariz.) finished it off to lift the Eagles to the win.

ERAU jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set, but HIU came back to close to within two at 18-16 with three straight points. Still leading by two at 20-18, the Eagles got a kill from Pauzer and a Royal attack error that provided enough of a cushion that lead to another set win.

Leading by just one at 10-9 in the third set, Embry-Riddle went on 6-1 run. Kjenstad started the run with a kill before an ace by Lily Figgins (FR/St. Charles, Mo.) polished it off and put the Eagles up 16-10. It proved to be all the cushion that ERAU would need as Clark ended things with back-to-back kills.
