Box Score 2 Embry-Riddle pitcher Vanessa Brink (Vail, Ariz.) earned two wins on the day as the Eagles swept Simpson University with a 2-0 game one win and a 6-5 win in 8 innings in the second game of the day.
Game 1
Brink pitched a gem, allowing just one hit and 22 batters to come to the plate as she struck out 11 batters.
Embry-Riddle needed just two runs in the win. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Tatum Chestnut (Peoria, Ariz.) got things going for the Eagles with a double to centerfield. Chestnut moved over to 3rd base on a groundout by Maddie Judge (Oro Valley, Ariz.) and was able to score on a defensive mistake to give ERAU the 1-0 lead.
The Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the 4th inning as Jaden Espinoza (Tucson, Ariz.) hit a double to left field and came around to score on a single by Autumn Sulusi (Kaneohe, Hawaii).
ERAU held on for the 2-0 win.
Game 2
Simpson scored first in the second game as the RedHawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning. Embry-Riddle answered right away with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sulusi hit her first of four doubles during the game and game around to score on a single by Jade Bayless (Redondo Beach, Calif.). Chestnut then walked and both runners advanced another base on a wild pitch. A single by Judge scored Bayless and gave ERAU the 2-1 advantage after two innings.
The RedHawks tied the score up in the top of the 3rd inning and took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 6th inning.
ERAU was able to score two runs in the bottom of the 6th. Sulusi hit another double and then a single by Emma Almodoba (Tucson, Ariz.) put runners on first and third for Bayless. A double by Bayless scored both runners and made the score 5-4 still in favor of Simpson as the game headed into the 7th inning.
After a clean defensive top of the 7th inning for the Eagles, Lily Anderson (Flagstaff, Ariz.) reached on an infield single in the bottom of the 7th and then stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. Leah Salas (Sahuarita, Ariz.) brought her home on a sacrifice fly to right field to tie things up at 5-5.
In the bottom of the 8th inning, Sulusi hit her fourth double of the game to start of the inning. Her pinch runner Natalie Gonzalez (Poway, Calif.) came around to score on a walk off double by Almodoba to give ERAU the season sweep of Simpson.
Embry-Riddle will play again this weekend in an important four game series against the Warriors of Westcliff University. First pitch is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 2pm at Eagle Softball Field.
