The women's soccer team headed to Soka University of America for a vital conference match up. They left with a 4-0 win, and a new all-time career assist leader in
Savannah Garn.
With a guaranteed slot to post-season play on the line, Embry-Riddle knew they would have to push the tempo of the game, and that they did. Registering the first of their 11 opening half shots in just the 2nd minute of play, the Eagles were looking to establish control of the game early. They wouldn't have to wait long, as junior forward
Kalyn Goodenough was taken town in the Lion's penalty box in just the 9th minute of play. Senior forward
Amanda Bennett converted the ensuing PK, putting ERAU up 1-0 early.
Kalyn Goodenough would then double the lead in the 30th minute, as she got on the end of a booming punt from ERAU keeper
Brenna Quinn, slipping a shot into the back of the Lion's net. The Eagles now leading 2-0, continued to press the backline of Soka. That pressured again paid off, as Goodenough would collect a pass from senior
Savannah Garn, and convert her second goal on the afternoon. Not only did that goal make the score 3-0 for Embry-Riddle, but the assist also made history for the program and
Savannah Garn. The assist was Savannah's 17th of her career, making her the Eagles new all-time leader in career assists, surpassing the mark of 16 that was previously held by #Julie Falsken# 11'.
The second half of action saw more of the same from Embry-Riddle, as they continued to attack the Lion's goal with shots. Soka keeper Ali Houghton was sharp on the day though, registering 6 of her 9 saves on the day in the second have alone. The Eagles would break through one more time though in the 79th minute. Utilizing a double assist from sophomore
Erica Nieves and senior
Chelsea Page, freshman midfielder Mariah Desmarais blistered a shot into the upper corner of the net to record her first collegiate goal. The game would finish 4-0 in favor of Embry-Riddle, clinching a spot in the upcoming CalPac Championships for the Eagles. The win brings the Eagles conference record to 4-3, with three more conference contests left to be played.
After the game Coach Poitras commented on the Eagle's win. "First off it was a great team effort today all around. I thought we were certainly strong defensively, and created some really good chances for ourselves. That is exactly the type of performances we will need as we head into this final stretch before playoffs." He added, "I couldn't be happier for Savannah as well. Assists are certainly not easy to come by, and for her to break that record is a wonderful accomplishment. Given she missed her freshman year with an injury too, it truly is something to be proud of achieving in her career."
The Eagles will have little time to enjoy the win, as they head north to Lancaster, CA to take on the University of Antelope Valley. A final non-conference match-up of the season for ERAU, kick off is slated for 3:00PM at the Lancaster National Soccer Center, Field #31.
