Carlson's Golden Goal Propels Eagles to Important Win

Box Score

PRESCOTT, ARIZ. – Through 106 minutes of play, it looked to be the same story as the last time Embry-Riddle and Westcliff met in men's soccer. That is until a bold play by a freshman goalkeeper and an unlikely sub being in the right place gave the Eagles an important win.

Ethan Carlson scored the Golden Goal in overtime with 3:10 away from another draw with Westcliff, and the Eagles took a 3-2 win on its home field Friday night. Carlson's third goal of the season is the first overtime winner for ERAU this fall.

The game winning play started with a long kick from the opposite keeper's box by freshman Elias Ammon. The ball bounced to Chiedu Ikeme, who broke away and banged his shot into the post. The ball rolled out to Carlson, a late substitution in double overtime, and he put it in the yawning cage.

"Coach told me to stay high up the field," Carlson said, "I tried to stay as high as I could and ended up being at the right place at the right time."

While Ikeme ended the night with an assist, he got his team back into the match with the game-tying goal in the 71'. The Eagles had picked up a lot of momentum as the second half went along without finding the equalizer, but the excellent forward finished when his team needed it the most.

"It was good," Ikeme said about his goal, I think it restored the energy in our team and what gave us the heart to win the game."

The win now sets up Embry-Riddle to win the Southwest pod on Sunday. A win for the Eagles gives them the championship, and they know there is still one more test ahead.

"We've got to get back to work tomorrow," head coach Dan Balaguero said. "Enjoy tonight, but get ready for Saint [Katherine] on Sunday. We're expecting a difficult game."

Kickoff against Saint Katherine in Prescott is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
