Baseball Earns First Win, Doubleheader Sweep with All-Around Effort

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The ERAU baseball team made plenty of history on Saturday, winning its first game in the program's existence in game one of a doubleheader against San Diego Christian. The Eagles did not stop there, winning game two of a doubleheader for its first ever day sweep and series win.

Game 1: ERAU 9, San Diego Christian 3

Sophomore pitcher Mitchell Mussler was pressed into starting duty on Saturday, and did an excellent job to give the Eagles a chance to win. Mussler pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, striking out six and allowing just one unearned run.

The great performance from Mussler allowed the ERAU offense to explode in the later innings, finally breaking the game open in the sixth. Tied at 1, a one-out double by Owen Cain gave the Eagles a two run lead, then Cain came around to score on a double by Bryson Ho.

ERAU then added two more runs in the seventh on back-to-back RBI hits from Blake Moore and Luke Jepsen. The Eagles then scored thrice more in the top of the ninth, with the big blow coming via Roberto Garza-Nunez's two-run ground rule double.

San Diego Christian did not go down easy, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth and keeping the basepaths full for nearly the entire inning. Ho recorded the final out, picking up a ground ball and sending it over to Sean Boskovich to secure the first win in program history.

Five different Embry-Riddle players had two hits, and seven players recorded at least one RBI. Eagle pitching allowed just six hits as a staff, and struck out eight batters in game 1.

Game 2: ERAU 10, San Diego Christian 4

The Eagles had plenty of hits left in their bats, scoring ten runs on ten hits during another big win. The Eagles scored a good chunk of runs early in this ballgame, getting four in the top of the second to get the offense started.

Ho knocked in half of the runs in the second inning, driving in a pair with his two-out single. Ho came around to scored thanks to Gavin Botts's double to center, and Carson Ramocinski drove one in as well.

The Eagles then scored five in the top of the seventh, giving themselves a big cushion heading into the Hawks' final three outs. Travis Strickler had a big three-run home run, and Josh Beattie drove in two more with a double to right center.

Cole Altheer did not give up a hit in his two innings to start, and the Eagles held the Hawks to just two hits in game two. Dayne Pengelly finished the final two innings, striking out four and walking just one to get ERAU its second consecutive victory.

Botts, Strickler, and Jepsen all had a pair of hits, and Jepsen led the game with his three RBI. Ho and Beattie had a pair of RBI each, and eight different players scored a run for ERAU.

The Eagles will get back on the field next week, as they play four games at the Coach Calderone Invitational in Maricopa County. ERAU's first game is scheduled for Thursday, January 27 against College of Idaho at Gene Autry Field in Mesa, Ariz. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
