Box Score 2 MESA, ARIZ. – The Embry-Riddle baseball team dropped its first game of the Coach Calderone Invitational, but came back in dramatic fashion in the second game on Thursday. ERAU trailed 6-0 after two innings, but rallied back for a ten-inning win over the Aggies.
College of Idaho 7, ERAU 4
Embry-Riddle was in a 2-1 game against College of Idaho entering the bottom of the fifth inning, and had cut the lead in half in the top half of the frame. The Yotes then scored five runs over the next two innings to build a sizable lead.
It took the Eagles a few innings to get going offensively, and ERAU scored three in the top of the eighth to cut a 7-1 deficit in half. While Embry was able to get baserunners through the later innings, the Yotes slammed the door in the ninth and took home its first victory of the year.
Roberto Garza-Nunez and Carson Ramoncinski had three hits, an RBI and scored a run each. Bryson Hp's lone hit of the morning was the big 2-RBI double down the left field line in the eighth.
Parker Cadacio struck out eight batters in five innings during his first career start. While the fifth inning was tough to navigate, Cadacio was only charged with three earned runs on Thursday.
ERAU 9, Oklahoma Panhandle State 8
The Eagles got off to a less than ideal start in game two on Thursday, allowing the Aggies to get off to a 6-0 lead after just the second inning. Embry-Riddle would have to slowly crawl back its way back into the game, but outscored OPSU 9-2 from the third inning on.
ERAU scored a run in the bottom of the third, but really jumpstarted its rally in the sixth. The Eagles scored three runs thanks to a pair of singles and a sac fly, then scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Aggies did add two in the top of the eighth before the Eagles scored its two, so ERAU needed a pair in the bottom of the ninth to stay alive. Owen Cain started the party for ERAU with a one-out infield single, and started a run of three consecutive baserunners.
Embry-Riddle tied the game thanks to an RBI groundout off the bat of pinch hitter Blake Moore. The Eagles had runners on second and third with two outs, but could not bring across the winning run.
The Eagles did bring the winning run across the plate, as Owen Cain laced a single down the left field line to bring home Gavin Botts. Botts got himself in great position, swiping second with two outs to set up the game-winning hit.
The pitching staff put together a great combined effort, and Jonah Montes was strong through the middle innings. In four innings, Montes allowed just two hits and struck out three, giving the Eagles a chance for its offense to fire up.
Five different ERAU players had at least two hits, led by Calvin Solie's 3-for-5 day. Solie drove in two runs, and six different Eagles drove in a run.
The Eagles will play its third game of the Coach Calderone Classic on Friday morning against Eastern Oregon. First pitch from Gene Autry Park in Mesa, Ariz. is set for 9:30 a.m.
