Eagles Drop First Two Against Saint Katherine

PRESCOTT, ARIZ. – The Embry-Riddle baseball team did not get off on the right foot in an important conference series on Friday, as the Eagles dropped both games of a doubleheader against Saint Katherine. Embry-Riddle did have big innings offensively, but hit cold stretches as well, and gave up some big inning of its own.

Game 1: Saint Katherine 15, Embry-Riddle 7

The Eagles scored five of its seven runs in the first three innings, and jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings. ERAU had plenty more opportunities to cash in, leaving seven runners on base in the first three innings, and leaving the bases loaded twice.

The Firebirds tied the game in the fourth inning, but broke it open in the final three innings, scoring multiple runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth. The Eagles did get a pair in the bottom of the ninth, but could not pull any closer.

Embry-Riddle did have 11 hits, and three of those came off Luke Jepsen's bat. Jepsen opened the game's scoring with a two-RBI single in the first, and had a double in the ninth inning.

The Eagles did rack up a lot of extra base hits, with five of the team's 11 hits getting more than one base. Travis Strickler and Calvin Solie each had a triple, and Josh Beattie had a solo home run in the third.

Game 2: Saint Katherine 15, Embry-Riddle 8

The Firebirds continued its offensive momentum into game two, scoring 12 of its 15 runs in the first three innings. USK did score in each of the first three innings, meaning they scored in six consecutive innings between the end of the first game and start of the second game.

The Eagles trailed 12-0 after the third inning, but did not go away easily. They scored eighth in the fourth and two in the fifth to close the deficit to 12-8.

The extra-base hits for Embry-Riddle were on display again, as they finished game two with five again, and had at least one of each variety.

Carson Ramocinski had a two-RBI single during the big fourth inning, and Jepsen had a two-RBI triple latter in the frame. Three different players had at multi-RBI games, and Strickler drove in a pair with his home run in the fifth.

Embry-Riddle will get back on the field on Saturday to wrap up its four-game series with Saint Katherine. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m.
