ERAU Bounces Back With DH Sweep Over Saint Katherine

PRESCOTT, ARIZ. – After dropping the first pair of games to Saint Katherine on Friday, the Embry-Riddle baseball team bounced back with some impressive offense on Saturday, sweeping a pair of games from the Firebirds. The Eagles banged out a total of 25 hits, including nine doubles and a home run, in taking the games by scores of 16-1 and 13-10.

Game 1: Embry-Riddle 16, Saint Katherine 1 (7 innings)

The Eagles continued its excellent offensive output this weekend and more in its first game against Saint Katherine on Saturday. ERAU scored in just four of the innings but scored three or more runs in each of those frames.

Just like game one on Friday, the Eagles wasted no time getting on the board, this time scoring four in the first inning. Embry-Riddle took advantage of three Firebird errors, and Calvin Solie drove in half of the runs with a two-out single up the middle.

Luke Jepsen was the Eagle who produced the two-out single in the second inning, giving ERAU the 7-0 lead. Owen Cain drove in the inning's first run with a double, the first of his two RBI doubles.

After going scoreless in the third and fourth innings, the Eagles piled on with five in the fifth inning. The big hit of the inning was Jepsen's two-run home run, and he finished just a triple shy of the cycle.

Embry-Riddle tacked on four more in the sixth inning to secure itself a run-rule victory. Cain had his second RBI double of the game, and then came around to score on a wild pitch.

Jepsen finished with four of the Eagles' 13 hits and drove in five runs. Cain went 3-for-4, and drove in three runs.

Aiden Vestbie delivered an excellent pitching performance, as he gave up just four hits and an earned run over the seven innings. Vestbie also struck out five batters, retiring the first nine Saint Katherine batters.

Game 2: Embry-Riddle 13, Saint Katherine 10

Embry-Riddle continued its offensive onslaught in the second game of the day, scoring 13 times on 12 hits. The Eagles scored in five of the seven innings of the non-conference game of the series, with Roberto Garza-Nunez and Solie collecting three hits each, while Sean Boskovich leading ERAU with three RBI.

Saint Katherine jumped on top in the top of the second on a two-run home run, but Embry-Riddle answered with four in the bottom half of the inning. An error and a double by Solie set up the first RBI of the day by Boskovich, a single to center. Travis Strickler tied the game with a hit up the middle before an error allowed two more to cross the plate to make if 4-2.

A bases loaded double highlighted a four-run fourth for the Firebirds, giving them a 6-4 lead. But it was short lived as the Eagles came back with five in the bottom half of the frame, with all scoring with two outs. After the first two hitters were retired, a walk and an infield hit put a pair aboard for Luke Jepsen, who delivered a single up the middle for the first run. Josh Beattie followed with an RBI single before Solie broke the tie with a two-run double. Solie the polished off the inning with an RBI single up the middle.

ERAU never trailed again, adding three more in the fifth, highlighted by Garza-Nunez's two-run double and a run in the sixth when Beattie was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Dayne Pengelly picked up the victory for the Eagles, coming out of the bullpen to toss a pair of innings, giving up a pair of earned runs and striking out three.
