Box Score 2 GLENDALE, ARIZ. – Embry-Riddle looked to have its biggest win in program history when a ball bounced to second base with two outs in the ninth. ERAU was unable to secure the final out, and put runners on the corners, giving No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene a chance to tie the game when it looked to be over.
A wild pitch breathed life into the Pioneers, as Cayden Brown raced home from third for what looked like the tying run. Eagles catcher Kevin Fedoruk perfectly took a bounce off the backstop and threw to Cole Altherr for a final out that turned disaster into jubilation for Embry-Riddle.
Through the first five innings on Friday night, Embry-Riddle and No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene scored just three combined runs. When the starting pitchers were removed, the offenses broke out in spectacular fashion.
After trailing 2-1 since the top of the second inning, MidAmerica Nazarene busted out five runs in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. The Pioneers would add one more run in the seventh, putting the Eagles in need of five runs with its final six outs.
The Eagles did not even use three outs before they regained its lead, scoring six runs in the top of the eighth. The first for ERAU batters in the eighth reached, and the Eagles combined timely hitting while taking advantage of walks and errors to regain what would be the game-winning lead.
Embry-Riddle had seven hits, but also walked eight times and getting hit by two pitches. The Eagles also benefited from a pair of MNU errors, and found a variety of ways to score.
Luke Jepsen led the way offensively for Embry-Riddle, going 3-for-4 and walking once. Roberto Garza-Nunez had two hits himself, including the game-winning RBI double in the eighth inning.
Aiden Vestbie had a solid five innings as the starter, striking out four and allowing just one unearned run. Jesse Kaphing had earned his first win as an Eagle with 1.2 innings, and Altherr allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings to earn the save.
Embry-Riddle will finish its time at the Coach Calderone Invitational with a doubleheader on Saturday at Gene Autry Park in Mesa, Ariz. The Eagles will play College of Idaho at 10 a.m. before matching up with No. 24 Taylor at 2 p.m.
