Embry-Riddle, Simpson Split First Two Games of Cal Pac Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – A bases loaded triple in the bottom of the eighth inning by junior Kevin Fedoruk (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) provided the winning runs for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) in the first game of a California Pacific Conference baseball doubleheader against Simpson University. The three runs gave the Eagles a 15-5 win before the Redhawks bounced back with a 13-5 win in game two.

Game 1

Simpson (8-15, 2-6 Cal Pac) picked up a run in the first on a sac fly, but junior Drew Barragan (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) tied it with a home run in the bottom of the second. The Redhawks went up again with a pair in the third, but Embry-Riddle (6-13, 2-3 Cal Pac) answered in its half of the frame on RBI singles by Senior Travis Strickler (Glendale, Ariz.) and junior Luke Jepsen (Temecula, Calif.).

In the fifth Simpson again came up with a pair of runs to take a lead for a third time, but again, ERAU answered, this time with six runs to take its first lead of the contest. After another RBI single by Strickler pushed the first run across, with junior Roberto Garza-Nunez (Salinas, Calif.) putting the Eagles on top with a two-run double. Barragan then capped off the uprising with his second home run of the game, a three-run shot that made it 9-5.

Junior Cole Altherr (Tucson, Ariz.) started for ERAU and came out in the sixth and retired the side in order to finish his day scattering nine hits to pick up the victory. Junior Parker Cardacio (Cypress, Calif.) shutdown and further Simpson offense the rest of the way, coming out of the pen to toss a pair of hitless innings.

Embry-Riddle won it in the eighth, scoring six times to walk-off the game via the 10-run rule, with all six runs scoring after two were out. With runners on the corners a wild pitch brought in the first run before Garza-Nunez singled home another. An error allowed a third run to score, before a hit batter loaded the bases for Fedoruk who ended it with his triple.

Game 2

Like the first game, Simpson scored a single run in the first, and then added two more in the second to jump on top 3-0. Embry-Riddle closed to 3-2 in the second when junior Owen Cain (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) brought home the first run on a ground out before Fedoruk picked up his fourth RBI of the day on a single.

Simpson came back with two in the fourth and one in the fifth to increase its lead to 6-3 after five. The Redhawks then broke it open with six in the sixth, getting four hits, a bases loaded walk, and taking advantage of an ERAU error. Embry-Riddle came back with one in the bottom half of the inning on a Barragan RBI double, but the Eagles could only manage one more run the rest of the way as Simpson went on to gain the split.
