Eagles Split with Redhawks on Walk-Off Single by Payton

Prescott- The Eagles were able to overcome a four-run lead by the Redhawks to defeat them 5-4 today in extra innings.

The Eagles dug a hole early in the game allowing four runs on 10 hits and two errors but came back in the third when the bats woke up after a lead-off homerun by catcher Kat Morgan. The Redhawks promptly made a pitching change bringing in game one pitcher Dayton Yingling who got designated player Erica Jex to ground out to the pitcher's mound and struck out Kaila Romero. Although Yingling gathered two quick outs she was unable to shutout The Eagles who had back to back to back hits including a triple by Hannah DeLuna to score two more runs bringing the score to 3-4. The Eagles were able to hold the Redhawks in the top of the seventh and in the bottom of the 7th Mackenzie Hospodka came into pinch hit for Kaila Provost and slammed a homerun over centerfield to tie the game. The Eagles were unable to secure the win in the 7th, so the teams went into the 8th inning and the international tie breaker. The pitcher Dayton Yingling was on second for the Redhawks, after a lineout to Avram by Selvaggio, third baseman Peyton Garner ripped a single into center to Hannah DeLuna. DeLuna fired a bullet to home that gunned down Yingling as she attempted to score from second and the Redhawks chance to score ended on a flyout by Turman to center. The Eagles began the bottom of the eighth with designated player Erica Jex on second base and Rylee Payton at the plate. On the first pitch Payton attempted to bunt and popped up the pitch foul, then fouled off the second, on the third pitch she drilled a line drive down left field line scoring Jex and giving The Eagles the win 5-4.

In game one The Eagles struggled at the plate and did not record a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning on a misplayed grounder by Garner that allowed Jex to reach base. She scored on a single by Kaila Romero after the sacrafice bunt by Makenzie Hospodka. The Eagles did not score again until the bottom of the sixth when they were able to string three more runs together but it was not enough to overcome an eight run lead by the Redhawks. Eagles lose 4-9.

The Eagles have three more home games remaining in the season. Two next Friday and Saturday against No. 10 Simpson University and then on April 19th when they will face Benedictine again. GO EAGLES!
