Eagles Lose Lead and Doubleheader

Prescott - The Embry-Riddle softball team gave up five runs in the top of the eighth inning, in a 13-10 loss on Thursday afternoon dropping the doubleheader 13-10 and 4-3 against Biola University.

Senior Keana Nakata was charged with the loss in the circle, throwing 2.2 innings of relief and giving up five earned runs on six hits and one strikeout. The Eagles offense exploded early on scoring six runs in the first four innings while holding Biola to only two and held the lead until the sixth.

Olivia Ramos pitched a solid five innings for Embry-Riddle but Biola's bat began to warm-up at the top of the sixth starting with a single by Maranda Galindo and followed by four more hits including two doubles for four runs to force Ramos out of the game. Nakatacame in and shut down Biola with a strikeout and groundout to second to end the inning.

Biola came back in the top of the 7th and scored two more runs on four hits and two ERAU errors but Embry-Riddle bounced back scoring two more of their own on a two-run shot over center field by Makenzie Hospodka to score Hannah Deluna and send the game into extra innings.

In the eighth, Biola'sbats kept producing. In the international tie breaker Karen Lieng began the inning at second base and scored on the sacrifice bunt by Maranda Galindo to take the lead. Biolascored four more on a single, ERAUerror, walk, and double giving them a commanding five run lead going into the bottom of the inning.

Embry-Riddle strung a series of hits together in the bottom of the eighth on singles by Erica Jex, Kaila Romero, and Katey Moorescoring two runs of their own but came up short of Biola's five runs.

Game two wasn't the same high scoring affair as game one but was equally as exciting. Biolakicked off the game with a solo home run by the designated hitter Kayla Neffbut ERAU answered back on a double by Katey Moore to score Kaila Romero who was hit by a pitch to start the game. Moore now has seventeen doubles and is third in the nation.

Biola scored two more in the top of the second on two hits to give them a two run lead 3-1 and tacked on one more in the third for a 4-1 lead. Embry-Riddle stuck with Biola scoring one in the third on a Biolaerror and single by Hannah Deluna to close the gap 4-2.

Neither team scored over the next three innings despite both teams combining for twenty-five hits in the game, thirteen for Embry-Riddle and twelve for Biola.

The Eagles had an opportunity to grab the win in the bottom of the seventh. The inning started with a single to shallow left by Kaila Romero, who then was called out when she ran into the second baseman when fielding the ball. Nelson then advanced on a single by Katey Moore and a fielder's choice by Biolathen scored on a single by Taylor Szathmary to the pitcher's mound. Down one run Embry-Riddle had the bases loaded with two outs but victory eluded The Eagles when Makenzie Hospodka struck out to end the game.

The home stand against Biola was the last non-conference games of the year for Embry-Riddle. They have three more conference series against Benedictine, Marymount, and Simpson this month as they fight for a position in the conference tournament.
