PRESCOTT, Ariz. Hosting its first California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) doubleheader of the season, the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) softball team saw Simpson (Calif.) take the first two games of the four-game series. The Redhawks led all the way in a 6-2 win and then staged a late comeback to take a 9-7 victory in nine innings in the second contest.
Game 1A leadoff home run on the second pitch of the game by Madison Wright started Simpson (18-18, 5-1 Cal Pac) off to a 2-0 first inning lead. After the Redhawks took a 3-0 lead in the third on a sac fly, Embry-Riddle (18-13, 1-3 Cal Pac) got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when a hit batter and a single put the first two on for the Eagles. An error on the base hit put the runners on second and third for junior
Bailey Critchlow (Stockton, Utah) who singled off the pitcher to bring home the first run. Senior
Hannah DeLuna (Tucson, Ariz.) then delivered a sac fly to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
It proved to be all that ERAU could do against Simpson starter, Sydney Moorhead. After the third she allowed just one more hit to the Eagles and picked up the victory with a seven-inning, five-hit, one earned run performance, striking out seven. The Redhawks put insurance runs on the board with one in the sixth and two in the seventh to finish off the win.
Game 2Simpson picked up a run in the first in game two as well, picking up an RBI single by Mia Olvera. Embry-Riddle answered in its half of the inning when junior
Katey Moore (Pleasanton, Calif.) dropped a two-run double down the line in left.
In the second the Eagles put runners on second and third on a pair of singles and a sacrifice for senior
Daisy Hatcher-Taylor (Bakersfield, Calif.), who doubled in both runs for a 4-1 lead. ERAU then loaded the bases for freshman
Haley Basye (Tucson, Ariz.), who drew a walk that made it 5-1. Senior
Kaila Romero (Lancaster, Calif.) the followed with an infield single to give the Eagles a five-run advantage.
Simpson then started a comeback in the fourth, getting a pair back on a Mazzie Davies single and a sac fly. The Redhawks then made it 6-4 in the fifth when Wright delivered an RBI single. In the seventh Simpson tied it up when Alexis Parras doubled in both runs.
In extra innings neither team could push across a run in the eighth, despite each team getting a runner aboard. In the ninth Simpson picked up a single and a pair of walks to load the bases with one down. Davies then cleared the bases with a double. Embry-Riddle got one back in the bottom half of the inning when Basye hit a shot off the scoreboard in left, but it was all that the Eagles could get as the Redhawks came away with the win.
