Embry-Riddle Splits Cal Pac DH with Benedictine at Mesa

PRESCOTT, Ariz. In the opening doubleheader of a four-game California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) softball series between Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) and Benedictine University at Mesa, the two sides each picked up a win. Benedictine took the first game, 7-5, before Embry-Riddle came back to take the nightcap, 6-1. The Redhawks banged out 14 hits in the first game, while sophomore Carly Carlsen (Littleton, Colo.) tossed a complete game for the Eagles in the second contest while freshman Mikendra Kramar (Livermore, Calif.) drove in a pair of key runs in the victory.

Game 1
After both teams scored an unearned run in the opening inning, Benedictine at Mesa (18-28, 5-9 Cal Pac) retook the lead with a pair of runs in the third when the Redhawks when a Cierra Amarillas single and an error on the play gave them a 3-1 lead.

Embry-Riddle (21-20, 4-10 Cal Pac) came right back with three in the bottom half of the inning, getting an RBI single by senior Daisy Hatcher-Taylor (Bakersfield, Calif.) before junior Katey Moore (Pleasanton, Calif.) put the Eagles on top with a two-run double.

In the sixth Benedictine took the lead again when it used four hits to score twice, including an RBI single by McKenzie Turman. Once again ERAU answered, getting a two-out RBI single by sophomore Elyssa Bramer (Lancaster, Calif.) to tie it up at 5-5.

A one-out triple by Lynzee Bollinger started the game-winning rally for the Redhawks. She came in to score on an error before back-to-back, two-out singles produced another run. Megan Grigsby, who came on to pitch in the sixth, worked around a double from freshman Haley Basye (Tucson, Ariz.) in the seventh to pick up the win.

Game 2
Embry-Riddle scored in each of the first five innings in game two in support of Carlsen's strong pitching performance. In the first a walk and a single put two on for Moore, who plated the first run of the game with a single to center.

After the Eagles added a second score in the second, Benedictine picked up what proved to be the only run it would get in the contest in third. A single, sacrifice, and a ground out put a runner on third for the Redhawks, with Morgan Haynes delivering the two-out single to make it a 2-1 game.

It did not stay a one-run game long, as Kramar delivered a shot deep into the gap in left after a pair of two-out walks. The Eagles then put the game away with a sacrifice fly by Basye in the fourth an RBI ground out by Bramer in the fifth.

Carlsen did the rest, allowing just three hits after the third inning while striking out pair to pick up the complete-game win.
