TORRANCE, Calif. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) picked up a pair of strong pitching performances in its California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) softball doubleheader at Marymount California, but it was only good enough for a split of the twinbill. The Eagles won the first game, 6-1, before the Mariners came back to win the second, 2-0. Senior
Olivia Ramos (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore
Carly Carlsen (Littleton, Colo.) combined to give just six hits and three unearned runs for ERAU.
Game 1Ramos tossed her best game of the season to lead Embry-Riddle (19-16, 2-6 Cal Pac) to the victory in game one. The Eagles gave her all the support she would need when they loaded the bases in the first on a walk, hit batter, and a single. With one down junior
Katey Moore (Pleasanton, Calif.) singled to bring home a pair of runs.
That was all the support that Ramos would need as she allowed just one unearned run in the third to Marymount California (12-30, 5-9 Cal Pac), giving up just four hits and striking out seven without issuing a walk.
Leading 2-1, Embry-Riddle put the game away in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of errors to score four times. Senior
Kaila Romero (Lancaster, Calif.) plated the first run of the inning with a triple, with junior
Lani Kaleikini (San Francisco, Calif.) adding a pinch-hit, RBI single for the Eagles.
Game 2In the second game of the afternoon both teams received strong pitching performances. Carlsen gave up just two hits and struck out three for ERAU while Annisa Hamilton gave up just three hits and struck out three, with both pitchers going all the way in the contest.
Two unearned runs in the first inning proved to be the difference for Marymount California. An error and a walk put the first two Mariners aboard, with a sacrifice moving the runners to second and third. A groundout plated the first run, with Sonia Escalera singling down the line in right to bring in what proved to be the final run of the game.
Embry-Riddle threatened in the seventh, loading the bases on a single by senior
Daisy Hatcher-Taylor (Bakersfield, Calif.), and error and a two-out walk to junior
LiAnn Ruth (Glendale, Ariz.). That was as close as the Eagles could get, however, as Hamilton got a ground out to first to end it.
