Box Score 2 WADDELL, ARIZ. – Two years away from an NAIA regular season game did not seem to throw off Embry-Riddle softball, as the Eagles allowed just one run in two games, and swept Arizona Christian on Saturday afternoon. ERAU also scored six runs in each game, and the team has now won four consecutive games dating back to the 2020 season.
Game 1: Embry-Riddle 6, Arizona Christian 1
The two teams had baserunners in the first two innings, but nobody made it all the way around the bases until the bottom of the third. Diana Miranda Montano hit a blast to left field for the team's first run and home run of the season.
ERAU scored another in the fourth after an error in the ACU outfield following a base hit. The Firestorm got one back in the fifth inning with an RBI single, but it was the only run they would scratch across all day.
Embry-Riddle broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring four times before needing to get the final three outs. The Eagles brought across all its runs with two outs, with Maddie Judge bringing in half of the inning's total with a two-RBI single up the middle.
Judge had a three-hit game to start the afternoon, driving in the pair and scoring a run herself. Kate Delaney had a three-hit game as well, getting on base via the hit in each of her at-bats.
Starting pitcher Mikaeli Davidson went six innings scattering six hits and a walk while striking out six as well. Davidson got herself into some trouble in the early innings, but she used her talent along with the support of her teammates to keep rolling.
"I can't do it without the support of my teammates," Davidson said. "They're always cheering, which keeps me positive when I have to work out of those innings."
Game 2: Embry-Riddle 6, Arizona Christian 0
Freshman Vanessa Brink made her collegiate debut in the first game, having to get out of a jam to close out the game. Brink picked up right where she left off with her first college start in Game Two on Saturday, keeping the Firestorm off the board.
Brink also gave up six hits, and two walks, scattering them over the seven innings of work. ACU was only able to get two hits in the final three innings, and six of her ten strikeouts came in the fifth inning or later.
Brink was working with a one-run lead for most of the game, as Delaney scored after a wild pitch in the first inning. Brink had to work out of a few jams as well throughout the game, and stayed locked in as she got deeper into the game.
"Usually when I start pitching, I just go into machine mode," Brink said. "With my teammates all round me, I get in the zone. Getting into the game is easy when my team is with me."
Embry-Riddle broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring four times on just two hits. One of those two hits drove in two runs, as Emma Almodoba singled up the middle to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Eagles had just four hits, but made the most of their opportunities when at the plate. Natalie Gonzalez swatted her first home run of the year, nearly in the same spot Miranda Montano did in the first game.
Embry-Riddle will have a scrimmage next Saturday, then will get back into the regular season schedule when they face OUAZ in a doubleheader on February 26. First pitch from Canyon View High School is scheduled for Noon.
