Brink Spins Perfect Game as Eagles Sweep Tucson NAIA Classic Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TUCSON, ARIZ. – After waiting over two weeks for its next set of games, the Embry-Riddle softball team came out and allowed OUAZ to have just one run and four hits over the pair of games in the opening day of the Tucson NAIA Classic. All of those offensive totals came in the first game for the Spirit, as Vanessa Brink pitched a no-hitter for the Eagles in a dominant 10-0 victory to close the afternoon.

Game 1: Embry-Riddle 3, OUAZ 1

The day started with a pitcher's dual, and OUAZ was the first team to get on the board on Monday. The Spirit scored a single run in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice, but it was the only run they would get all day.

Embry-Riddle took awhile to get the offense going, but did all of its damage in the top of the sixth. Sam Holbert and Diana Miranda Montano hit back-to-back two-out home runs to give ERAU a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Mikaeli Davidson held the Spirit off in the seventh, getting three outs in three batters to give ERAU the win. Davidson was great all day, allowing four hits, striking out nine and not giving up an earned run.

Davidson also contributed at the plate, recording a hit along with three other Eagles players. Holbert drove in the pair on her home run, and Miranda Montano drove in herself.

Game 2: Embry-Riddle 10, OUAZ 0 (6 innings)

Vanessa Brink pitched a shutout in her first career start two weeks ago, and followed it up with an even more impressive performance. Brink put together a perfect game – did not allow a baserunner and struck out four – one of the all-time performances in the circle in program history.

Brink faced just the 18 batters, and got three of the four punchouts in the final two innings. Brink has not allowed a run in the 14 innings to start her career.

The Eagles got its offense started much earlier, and scored its runs in bunches during the second game of the day. ERAU scored three runs in the second inning, with the big blow coming on an error to score a pair with two outs.

Embry-Riddle had traffic on the bases early and often in the fifth inning, as they added three more to its run total. Kristin Valido drove in two with a pinch-hit single, and Natalie Gonzalez added a RBI sac fly for the Eagles.

ERAU then scored four more in the sixth inning to give them a 10-0 lead. Holbert hit another home run, this time of the three-run variety, and set the Eagles up for the run-rule win.

The top eight of the Eagles lineup recorded at least a hit, and all ten players to make a plate appearance reached base at least once. Holbert, Kate Delaney and Shaylee Sanders each had a pair of hits, plus Sanders and Gonzalez drove in a run each as well.

The Eagles get back on the field on Tuesday afternoon when they face off with Tabor College. First pitch of the doubleheader in Tucson is scheduled for 10 a.m.
