Box Score 2 PRESCOTT, ARIZ. – After scoring seemingly at will through its first 12 wins, the Embry-Riddle softball team split a pair of pitcher's duals against Simpson on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles dropped a 3-1 decision in the first game, then scored game two's only run in the bottom of the tenth inning to walk it off.
Game 1: Simpson 3, Embry-Riddle 1
The Eagles had the best chance to score the afternoon's first run, as they had the bases loaded, but could not bring one across. Simpson scored in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead, but it did not take long for Embry-Riddle to respond.
ERAU scored a run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to Jaden Espinoza's single to bring home Danielle Jamieson. The Eagles had another opportunity to get a second run and tie the game, but were unable to do so.
The Red Hawks got another run in the sixth to double its lead. Embry-Riddle had ten hits in the first game, and struck out just twice in a show of disciplined hitting.
Eight different Eagles had hits, and Rachel Hammonds and Mikaeli Davidson each had two. Davidson had another decent day in the circle, striking out 11 while allowing just a pair of earned runs.
Game 2: Embry-Riddle 1, Simpson 0
After a game with a lot of hits and few runs, both were hard to come by in the final contest of the afternoon. The teams combined for nine hits, and needed ten innings to find a winner.
The lone run came in after Maddie Judge beat a throw home after Tatum Chestnut put the ball in play. Davidson recorded another hit in the game, plus Kate Delaney, Shaylee Sanders and Alexus Marquez each had one.
Vanessa Brink had another exceptional start, striking out 18 hitters and finishing the complete game. Brink started the game giving up a leadoff double, but allowed just four hits the rest of the way.
Brink did not allow a runner past second base until the tenth inning, where a runner started the frame on second. Despite the pressure of the international tiebreaker to start what would be the final inning, Brink got the three out to keep the game tied and set up her team for the victory.
The Eagles get back on the field on Sunday for another doubleheader with Simpson. First pitch from the Eagles Softball Field is scheduled for 10 a.m.
