Eagles Extend Win Streak to Seven in Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHANDLER, ARIZ. – As the Embry-Riddle softball team has built itself as the Cal Pac's team, the Eagles are consistently getting the best effort from teams. The top team in the conference proved why they sit there again on Saturday, picking up a hard-fought doubleheader sweep over Benedictine-Mesa.

Game 1: Embry-Riddle 4, Benedictine-Mesa 0

The game was scoreless through the first five innings, and the Eagles had just three hits entering the top of the sixth. ERAU got four hits in the inning alone, and scored the game's only runs during its offensive outburst.

Alexus Marquez led off the sixth inning with a home run, and it opened up the offense for ERAU. Kate Delaney then doubled, and was eventually brought home by Mikaeli Davidson's single.

Diana Miranda Montano hit the game's second home run in the sixth inning as well, driving one to give the Eagles its four-run lead that would stand up. In total, five hitter reached base for Embry-Riddle, as Sam Holbert also reached on a two-out error.

Davidson was excellent in the circle again, spinning her first complete-game shutout of the season. Davidson struck out six and gave out four hits, plus retired the final 14 Redhawk batters she faced to end the game.

Game 2: Embry-Riddle 6, Benedictine-Mesa 1

The two teams each scored a run in the first inning, then found themselves in the same situation as in Game 1. The contest went scoreless from the second through sixth innings, as ERAU and BenU-Mesa were deadlocked at one.

In the first, Miranda Montano had a one-out double, then scored on a Danielle Jamieson single. The Eagles had a pair of hits in each of the first two innings, and had eight knocks before the seventh inning.

The Eagles broke the game open in the seventh, scoring five times to take a 6-1 lead. Rachel Hammons led off the inning with a walk, then stole second and came around to score later on a passed ball.

The big hit of the seventh was the grand slam off the bat of Davidson, putting the game effectively out of reach. Miranda Montano and Kate Delaney singled, and Jamieson reached on an error to set up the big blast from Davidson, her first grand slam of the season.

Miranda Montano had three hits on the contest, with Jamieson and Kristin Valido recording a pair of hits. Davidson's home run was her first knock of the second game, and eight different Eagles had a hit.

Vanessa Brink did not allow an earned run in the seven innings, and struck out 10. Brink now has 104 strikeouts so far this season, the most in the Cal Pac, and has allowed two earned runs or less in the last eight appearances.

The Eagles will wrap up its series with Benedictine-Mesa on Sunday afternoon with another doubleheader in Chandler. First pitch from Seton Catholic Preparatory is scheduled for Noon.
