Historic Season Ends at NAIA National Championship

MEDFORD, ORE. – The best season in the history of Embry-Riddle softball came to an end on Saturday, as the Cal Pac Champions lost its elimination game to #8 Southern Oregon. The 24th-ranked Eagles held off elimination earlier in the afternoon by defeating Taylor, but fell to the Raiders to get eliminated from the Southern Oregon Bracket.

The Eagles wasted no time getting into its first of two elimination games, scoring all of its runs in the first three innings. ERAU quickly built a 4-2 lead after the third, and despite some chances for Taylor near the end of the game, the Eagles slammed the door to advance.

In the first inning, Maddie Judge led off the frame with a single, then eventually scored on a base hit from Diana Miranda Montano. Judge then doubled in a pair of runs in the second to get ERAU the 3-0 lead through two.

Embry-Riddle answered Taylor's two runs in the top of the third with a run of its own in the bottom half. Miranda Montano picked up her second RBI of the game with a solo home run, pulling some of the momentum to the Eagles.

Vanessa Brink had another excellent start, striking out six in five innings to earn her 22nd win of the season. Kate Delaney earned her fifth save with a pair of innings in the circle, allowing just one hit without walking a batter to close out the victory.

Judge and Miranda Montano each had three hits, combining for six of ERAU's nine in the contest. Lily Anderson, Emma Almodoba and Sam Holbert each had one, and Holbert smacked a double.

While the Eagles trailed the entire contest, they did have its opportunities to tie the game. They had the tying run at the plate in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not tie the game.

Embry-Riddle had eight hits during the game, and took three walks as well. Rachel Hammons and Danielle Jamieson each had two hits, and Hammons stole a base during the contest.

Holbert drove in the Eagles' lone run, beating out an infield single to pull the Eagles within three. Delaney had another great effort in the circle in relief, going four innings, spreading out five hits and a walk to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard to end the game.

The historic season comes to an end as the Eagles will look to build off a season in which it set program records for wins, conference wins and winning percentage. Embry-Riddle will look to defend its first conference championship in the Spring of 2023.
