Box Score 2 SURPRISE, ARIZ. – The Embry-Riddle softball team traveled back to Willow Canyon High School a week after the Eagles swept OUAZ in a doubleheader. ERAU was looking for another pair of wins this Friday afternoon, but fell in a pair of close contests.
Game 1: OUAZ 8, (RV)Embry-Riddle 4
The Eagles managed to score the afternoon's first run on Lily Anderson's solo home run to center, and ERAU rolled with a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning. After the Eagles did not score in the top of the fourth, both teams opened up its offenses.
OUAZ managed a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, but Embry-Riddle responded with three of its own in the top of the fifth. The big hit in the fifth was Anderson's double down the right field line that scored a pair and gave ERAU a 4-2 lead.
The hit that gave OUAZ the lead, one which they would never give back, came during a four-run fifth inning. After scoring once, the Spirit got a three-run home run to take a 6-4 advantage, and then would add a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
Anderson finished with two hits and three RBI, scoring a run as well on her solo shot in the first. Kate Delaney finished with a hit, RBI and run scored to contribute to the Eagle offense.
Game 2: OUAZ 9, (RV)Embry-Riddle 8
Game two of the afternoon found even more offense between both teams, including a furious comeback from Embry-Riddle. After falling behind 5-1, the Eagles erased two separate multi-run deficits before a walk-off double gave the Spirit a doubleheader sweep.
After giving up a run in the bottom of the first, the Eagles immediately tied the game on an Anise Romo single to bring in Emma Almodoba. The Spirit would then add two runs in both the third and fourth for a 5-1 advantage.
Embry-Riddle would quickly erase the deficit in the fifth inning, as three singles would bring around four runs as the Eagles took advantage of its opportunities. Jenna Sumpter had a two-RBI single for the big hit of the inning, sandwiched in between RBI singles from Almodoba and Anderson.
The Spirit would answer with three of its own runs in the bottom of the fifth, putting the Eagles behind once again. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, needed a big Embry-Riddle comeback in the seventh to extend the game.
Embry-Riddle started the inning with two singles, but then quickly had two outs due to a double play. A walk to Anderson extended the inning, and Anderson stole second to put runners at second and third.
Anderson and Katie Jamieson would come around to score on Autumn Sulusi's single, pushing ERAU within one. Sulusi would score on the next at-bat, as Diana Miranda Montano would bring her around to tie the contest.
The Eagles would not be able to push the game into extras, as the Spirit used small ball to put a runner into scoring position. A double from Brenna Gonzalez would end the contest, not allowing ERAU another opportunity to complete its comeback.
ERAU finished with 12 hits in the final game of the day, and four different players recorded multi-hit games. Almodoba, Sumpter and Romo each had a pair of hits, and Miranda Montano had three knocks to go along with a walk.
The Eagles will now turn its focus to its home opener on Saturday against Arizona Christian. Game 1 of the doubleheader between the two in-state foes is slated to start at 1 p.m. from Eagle Softball Field.
