Box Score 2 GLENDALE, Ariz. – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's (Ariz.) softball team carried a lead late into the first game of a double header at Arizona Christian, only to see the Firebirds come back to win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth that resulted in a 3-2 loss. In game two ACU jumped out front with three first inning runs and never looked back as the Firestorm completed with sweep with a 7-2 win.
Game 1
Embry-Riddle (5-7) came out strong in the first inning of game one, with the second hitter of the contest, sophomore Lilly Anderson (Flagstaff, Ariz.) deposited a pitch over the wall in center for a 1-0 lead. With two away senior Diana Miranda Montano (Tucson, Ariz.) beat out an infield hit and then came around to score on a double to right by freshman Leah Salas (Sahuarita, Ariz.) for a 2-0 Eagle lead.
Sophomore Vanessa Brink (Vail, Ariz.) kept Arizona Christian off the board for five innings as the Eagles clung to their lead. But in the bottom of the sixth a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with two away. Arizona Christian (12-5) then got a double from Taylor Schleisman that cleared the bases and led to the win.
Game 2
In the second game it was Arizona Christian that jumped out early, scoring three times in the first. Embry-Riddle got on the board in the third when junior Bradee Jeffery (Manteca, Calif.) and freshman Anise Romo (Waddell, Ariz.) led off the inning with singles. With one down Anderson then picked up her second RBI of the day with a ground out to short to make it 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth the Firestorm came up with four runs to put the game out of reach, with the big blow a two-out, two-run double by Claire Buckley that made it 7-1. The Eagles picked up a run in the seventh when freshman Katie Jamieson (Tucson, Ariz.) stroked a pinch-hit, RBI single up the middle that scored sophomore Natalie Gonzalez (Poway, Calif.), who had led off the inning with a triple. That was all the offense that the Eagles could muster, however, as ACU went on to the victory and the doubleheader sweep.
