Box Score 2 SURPRISE, ARIZ. – The Embry-Riddle softball team got back on the right track on Friday, picking up a pair of wins over OUAZ. The Eagles won 6-3 in the first game, and then dominated from start to finish on its way to an 18-1 victory to earn the series sweep.
Game 1: (RV) Embry-Riddle 6, OUAZ 3
The Eagles got down early, as they allowed three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Spirit scored its only runs on a three-run home run, and would only get four hits over the final six innings.
Embry-Riddle got on the board in the third inning, as Alexus Marquez brought in Lily Anderson, then Bradee Jeffrey scored on an error in the same play. The Eagles would tie the game in the fifth when Marquez scored on a Kate Delaney single.
Anderson would drive in what would be the game-winning run with a single, scoring Autumn Sulusi. Anise Romo would score on an error and Delany would come across on a Meredith Tutrone sacrifice fly in the seventh to give ERAU the three-run cushion.
Delaney reached base each time at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk. The top three spots in the lineup each had two hits, as Anderson, Marquez and Jaden Espinoza combined for six knocks. Emma Almodoba also had two hits, and walked once to start Friday.
After a rocky first inning, Vanessa Brink bounced back brilliantly, finishing with even strikeouts. Brink did allow just the four hits in the final six innings to earn her first win of the season.
Game 2: (RV) Embry-Riddle 18, OUAZ 1
After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles scored in each of the final four frames to earn a run rule victory. ERAU scored seven in the second, four in the third and sixth in the fourth before adding one more in the fifth.
The Eagles induced a death by single in the second inning, as after Almodoba doubled down the right field line for the game's first run, ERAU scored five of the final six runs on the frame on singles. Anise Romo, Marquez, Diana Miranda Montano and Sulusi each had a single to bring in runs, with Miranda Montano bringing in two with her base knock.
After taking advantage of mistakes in the third inning to score four more times, the Eagles scored four runs on a pair of RBI doubles, and Almodoba also had an RBI single. Jenna Sumpter and Sulusi had back-to-back RBI doubles, with Sumpter's clearing the bases.
Six different ERAU players finished with multi-hit games, and the Eagles had 22 hits in total. Marquez had four hits, Anderson and Miranda Montano each had three, and Salas, Sulusi, Almodoba and Romo posted a pair.
Claire Streeter earned her first career win as an Eagle, pitching five innings and allowing just four hits. Streeter also had three strikeouts, and never allowed more than two hits in an inning.
The Eagles will get back on the field on Saturday as they look to knock off seventh-ranked Oregon Tech. The first game of the doubleheader from Arizona Christian University's softball field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
