Box Score 2 Embry-Riddle started their weekend in Glendale well with a two game sweep of Arizona Christian as they won 10-3 in game one and then 5-3 in the second game in extra innings.
Game 1
ERAU scored first in the top of the 2nd inning as they got three runs on three hits. Emma Almodoba (Tucson, Ariz.) hit a one out double to center field and Jaden Espinoza (Tucson, Ariz.) followed that with a single to move Almodoba to third base. Meredith Tutrone (Scottsdale, Ariz.) benefited from a Firestorm error as she reached first to load the bases for Maddie Judge (Oro Valley, Ariz.). Judge hit a single that scored all three baserunners and was able to move to second on an error in the outfield to give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage.
Just like in the second inning, Embry-Riddle added three more runs in the 3rd. Diana Miranda Montano (Tucson, Ariz.) led off the inning with a single. Kate Delaney (Fort Collins, Colo.) advanced Miranda Montano to third with a single up the middle in the following at bad. Miranda Montano scored on a throwing error and Delaney advanced to second. Almodoba had her second hit of the day to drive in Delaney to make the score 5-0 ERAU. Embry-Riddle's third run of the day came on another error and after the top of the third inning the Eagles held a 6-0 lead.
Arizona Christian cut into the lead in the bottom of the third with a solo homerun and added two more runs in the 5th, but ERAU put the game out of reach in the top of the 7th with four more runs.
Miranda Montano led off with another single and then Autumn Sulusi (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Almodoba were walked to load the bases. Espinoza was hit by a pitch to score Miranda Montano and with the bases still loaded two more Eagles were walked. Judge reached first on a fielder's choice which scored the fourth run of the inning for Embry-Riddle.
Vanessa Brink (Vail, Ariz.) earned the win for ERAU as she scattered five hits over five innings and struck out five batters.
Game 2
Embry-Riddle jumped out to another lead in game two against Arizona Christian with two runs in the top of the second inning. Autumn Sulusi (Kaneohe, Hawaii) started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Emma Almodoba (Tucson, Ariz.) was then walked as well and both runners advanced into scoring position on a groundout by Tatum Chestnut (Peoria, Ariz.). With two outs, Anise Romo (Waddell, Ariz.) hit a single to score both runners and put ERAU up 2-0.
ERAU played some great defense to keep the Firestorm off the scoreboard in the bottom of the 2nd inning and added to their lead in top of the 3rd. Lily Anderson (Flagstaff, Ariz.) led off the inning with a single and scored on a Sulusi hit to make the score 3-0 Eagles.
ACU answered in the bottom of the third with a run of their own and after three innings, the score was 3-1.
Neither team scored again until the Firestorm hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game at 3-3.
The teams headed to extra innings still tied at 3-3. Sulusi started on second for ERAU and was bunted over to third by Leah Salas (Sahuarita, Ariz.). Chestnut then bunted her way on to first base and Romo followed with a single to score Sulusi and give the Eagles a one run lead. Embry-Riddle then executed a double steal to score Chestnut as they took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning. ERAU played great defense and got a game ending double play.
