ERAU Begins Cal Pac Play with a Sweep of Park

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Embry-Riddle was picked to win the Cal Pac once again by the coaches and started their campaign with a two game sweep of Park Gilbert as the Eagles won game one 8-2 and game two 13-5.

Game 1

In the first game, ERAU jumped on top right away as Maddie Judge (Oro Valley, Ariz.) led off with a walk and advanced to 3rd on a double by Leah Salas (Tucson, Ariz.).  When Diana Miranda Montano (Tucson, Ariz.) singled a batter later, Judge scored to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  Autumn Sulusi (Kaneohe, Hawaii) singled in Salas and then Emma Almodoba (Tucson, Ariz.) had the first of her eight hits on the day to score both Sulusi and Miranda Montano.  After one inning, Embry-Riddle led 4-0.

ERAU added a run in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings.

In the 2nd inning, Judge scored again as Miranda Montano knocked her in with her second single of the day.  In the 3rd inning, Almodoba scored on a double by Meredith Tutrone (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

After the Buccaneers got two runs back in the top of the 4th inning, Kate Delaney (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored on Almodoba's third hit of the game after being walked.

The last Eagle run was a solo homerun by Tutrone to start the bottom of the 5th inning.

Vanessa Brink (Vail, Ariz.) earned the win in the circle for Embry-Riddle pitching six innings and only giving up four hits.

Game 2

Park jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Eagles answered back with 5 runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Lily Anderson (Flagstaff, Ariz.) got things going for ERAU with a single to centerfield followed by a single by Miranda Montano to put runners at first and second.  A double by Sam Holbert (Gilbert, Ariz.) scored Anderson and then Almodoba hit a single to right field to score both Miranda Montano and Holbert.

Sulusi hit her first double of the game to score Almodoba and then Tatum Chestnut (Peoria, Ariz.) traded places with Sulusi for the 5th Eagle run of the inning.

Park tied the game up with two runs in the top of the 3rd inning at 5-5, but once again Embry-Riddle answered back.

ERAU scored four runs in the bottom of the 4th as Tutrone led off the inning with a double.  Tutrone advanced to third on a sac bunt by Judge and scored on Anderson's second hit of the day, this time a double.  Anderson came across the plate on a wild pitch to make the score 7-5.  Holbert then reached on a hit by pitch and Delaney an error to bring up Almodoba once again.  Almodoba hit a double to right center allowing both runners to score and after four innings, ERAU led 9-5.

Miranda Montano led off the bottom of the 6th with a single followed by a walk from Delaney to put runners on first and second.  Jade Bayless (Redondo Beach, Calif.) loaded the bases as she reached on an error and once again Almodoba knocked in two runners with a single.  Sulusi then hit another double to end the game in the 6th inning as Embry-Riddle won by the run rule 13-5.

Claire Streeter (San Marino, Calif.) was the winning pitcher in game two for ERAU as she pitched all six innings for the Eagles.

Embry-Riddle and Park Gilbert will finish the series with two more games tomorrow at Eagle Softball Field with first pitch at 12pm.
